Hi everyone,

I've just had my solar setup installed — will share pics etc. shortly — but at the moment I'm struggling to get my SolarAssistant connected to the inverter.

I'm using a Sunsynk 5kW SG01LP1. I bought the RS485 cable from the SolarAssistant shop and a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B (4GB) from PiShop.co.za.

First problem:
When the installers inserted the RS485 cable, the RJ45 connector just fell off. Luckily, I have a crimping tool, so I fixed it on the spot and reconnected it.

Second problem:
SolarAssistant isn't getting any response from the inverter. Just to confirm:
  • Should the cable be inserted in the left upper RJ45 port labeled "METER"?
  • Do I need to use an RJ45 splitter?
  • Or could the issue be that I crimped the wrong pins?
Any advice or comments are welcome — would really appreciate your help.

You'll need to use a splitter if your battery is plugged into the CAN port.

Your BMS can port and RS485 (used for solar assistant) are combined into one.

Feel free to pm me for further details

Or could the issue be that I crimped the wrong pins?

Very possible. Mine also came off when I was doing some rewiring (I pulled on it a little too hard).

I looked online for the wiring diagram but got it wrong the first time, second time I recrimped and it worked fine. I cannot remember what pins they were though.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions and feedback but after some research I came to the conclusion that the METER port cannot be used for Solar Assistant, it's rather used to connect an external power meter and to monitor and manage power flow apparently. I've asked my Master Sunsynk installer and he hasn't even heard about Solar Assistant.

I've ordered a splitter so lets see if that works.

Ja, so the splitter arived today and connected it to the inverter and Bob's your uncle, it works!!
