Solar Assistant - Paid Updates

All I want is to be able to link an SMB share and/or cloud storage account to allow me to automate daily backups. I often go weeks forgetting to backup because it's a pain to do.
Have you pinged them this feature request? If so then i can also add my 2c and hopefully we build some traction for it

No, there isn't really a central place for stuff like this like a forum or anything is there?

Could email, but that feels a bit ineffective.

You can opt out to continue using your original license terms: one device, non-transferable, with free lifetime updates.
Where does one do that? I can't seem to find the option ?

This automation also doesn't work. Does anybody know why ? Previously it was set only for a 1 minute each time, but it never fired. I changed it to what is below, but that also hasn't worked. Appears to be no trace that the automation even tried to run (unsure if it can even be seen).

Don’t use Solar Assistant but since it runs on a Pi is there no way to do it the other way around and SSH into it?

Then you could just have it rsync via a cron job.

It's definitely possible but not trivial, when you backup in SA it runs a job that creates a new zip file with the latest database backups that is compatible with the restore process and I'm not familiar with the tools being used.

If somebody goes through the effort to document how to do it then I'd definitely go that route.

I guess this is our unofficial solar assistant thread , so I will post here.

Was searching for some information on forecast solar wrt to auto dampening and this link came up. It's looks kinda new , but could be interesting for some people who don't want to deal with MQTT.

I ain't breaking anything in my system. MQTT stays!

I'll give it a try

can you have both this and the MQTT working? i should think so
The MQTT works fine for me. The data is used in a few dashboards and automations. In my case, I probably get no benefit from switching.

Ok, I am too Dom. What if your docker PC is like 40m away from the inverter. How do you physically connect PC to the inverter and battery ?

At least with the Pi, you can do that anywhere with the short USB to rs232 cables.

You can run docker on Pi. That frees up your Pi to do multiple things rather than be dedicated to Solar Assistant.
You can also run solar assistant on other SBCs that run docker.
You can also run it on any number of devices - maybe an old laptop that you repurpose, etc.

What if your docker PC is like 40m away from the inverter? Move it closer? That's like saying "What if I want my inverter 100m away from my battery?".

Well, using your examples, the pi by itself is a better elegant solution.

I guess docker works best on pi4/pi5 with more memory, etc.

And since you are being a bit facetious in your response , yes you can have your batteries 100m away from your inverter. It's possible though one would be foolish to do so, since the cost of cabling would be prohibitive and you would have some transmission losses.

Many of us would not move a PC or whatever to be closer to the inverter just because we want to run in docker. God forbid an old laptop - The inverters and batteries in a places like garages etc where it's dusty, gets dirty.

And hence I go back to my question, if I have a docker server, and it's obviously not in the room with inverters and batteries, an extra long USB to Rs232 cable would not work because of signal loss. Is there a way to solve that?

In the same way you can put your PC wherever you want?

Then this solution is probably not for you.

I didn’t see that question in your original post, but a quick google says yes? https://www.geewiz.co.za/kits-and-c...b-extender-over-ethernet-kit-usb-ext-60m.html

As for compatibility, never tried it so take it with a pinch of salt.

The docs say you need 'network to the inverter' so I am going to hazard a guess that it might work with the standard Deye dongle, in my case. I'm giving this a bash tonight and will revert back if I manage.
