A friend on mine is working on software that can encode data using photons which get sent out via the phone's cameras flash. It uses gps to pinpoint satellites which the photon-stream can bounce off of to reach the recipients phone (via their light sensor). It basically bypasses the need for service providers. He has future plans for launching mirrored spheres into low-earth orbit to bypass the reliance on other satellites. If you want to consider a possible merger between the two ideas - I'd be willing to help finance the project.
