Solar geyser basics

I had a look over the weekend and the solar panel for my solar geyser is looking a bit dirty.
I sprayed it with hose pipe, didn't seem to help much.
It's a bit of a mission to climb up our roof.
1. Is cleaning it necessary, ie would it increase its performance?
2. Best/easiest method to clean?

a broom and a hose pipe- that's if there is a lot of dust on the Panel or tubes
