Read it again more carefully, that isn't what he says.
He says that 80 will stay hot longer and that you then use a tempering valve on the exit of the geyser to bring it down to 60 in the pipes so that people don't burn themselves.
He does not say that at all.
 
Surely because there is less energy used to maintain 60 degrees than 80 degrees?
From personal experience, having specifically asked *not* to have the tempering valve installed, my geyser remains hotter for longer than a friend's.

There is a huge amount of physics involved in the process, so the statement made needs a whole host of variables to be clarified.
 
Bacteria eg legionnairres? Seems geyser temp should be 55 - 65°C for safety.

Usually, there is no growth above 55°C, and a temperature of over 60°C has a bactericidal effect.
Note that if your geyser temp is 55 it will spend a substantial amount of time *below* 55 where growth can occur and when it does reach 55 that will just stop growth not kill it.

even when the thermostat is set at 60°C, a high percentage (approximately 40%) of electric water heaters remain contaminated because of the lower temperature, about 30°C to 40°C at the bottom of the tank.
Now granted this varies based on the geyser, but this means that even 60 is not necessarily enough to kill it, I imagine the gradient is worse in vertical geysers and not so bad in horizontal ones, we tend to have mostly horizontal ones at least, but still one can't assume that because the geyser is set to 60 that all the water in the geyser is 60.

Having a tempering valve or not cannot affect the geyser temperature at all. It only mixes the outgoing water with cold water. If you are mixing the water at the sink/bath/shower to the same temperature, the amount of energy required is the same and the temperature drop in the geyser will be the same. The only difference will be the heat loss in the pipes after the mixing valve to the endpoint, which will be higher without a tempering valve.

So I got one more geyser to work on in my house , and was looking at a heat pump instead of a new solar geyser.

Contacted a company called HI TEMP and they quoted me just over R21k :eek:

Now why would I spend R21k for a heat pump when I can add a few more g's and fit a brand spanking new solar geyser.

Before I contact Afrilanga again, anyone install a 200L solar geyser recently ? I'd like to know your experiences and suggestions.

My dad likes heat pumps but my argument is he pays for electricity all year round, ok it is less than the KW on a geyser, but I can get free heating for at least 7 months of the year maybe 8 with the odd days in winter and if we all shower within a half hour of the first person showering. So for me it makes sense to go solar.
 
Or run the solar output through an intelligent gas geyser. No electricity at all.


Well, 100watts while it's operating but that's nothing
 
Afrilanga quoted me R20k for a 150L Solar Geyser.

I don't think anyone else can come in cheaper, and the 300L I installed a few months back works well. So Afrilanga is getting my money ...
