Solar Install Quotes (Cape Town)

I'm busy getting pricing on a system and just curious to get a feel for what I should be expecting installation to cost.

The system in question is 10 X 540W panels, 8KW Sunsynk, 10KWh Sunsynk battery. It's not the easiest installs but also not super difficult, it's on the second storey of a flat roof so it's a bit of mission to get the panels up there but easy to install once you're up there.

I got a quote last week for the equipment which I thought was pretty competitive but the install team quoted me today for R33k (including COC) which sounds pretty excessive.

What did you guys pay for yours? What was the difficulty level of the install?

Quote I got was R12k for panels and inverter installed + CoC.

Since you’re CPT maybe an additional R2500 for that registration if that

Is the install quote just for the labour or does it include the mounting structure, wiring, protection box (changeover switch, surge protection), disconnector switch, trunking, CoCT registration, etc?
The inverter, panels & battery is the bulk of your material cost but there is a lot of "extras" involved.

All the equipment is quoted separately, the installation quote is only labour, and COC essentially.

Then that quote seems high. My inverter & 1 battery's installation & CoC amendmend was +-R 9000. So to install 1 more battery and 10 panels for R24k more, seems high.
What about the City of Cape Town sign off and registration? Is that included? Some guys are charging over 5 grand just for the "engineering" sign of.

I think so, it's likely under "System Commissioning".

Also having me eyes on solar products, but maybe it will work out cheaper to get a bundle option - inclusive of labour.
 
Check for instance the website of Solar Advice where they indicate that their installer's can do it for an additional R 5750

Technically it's free if you do it yourself.

R5k is the going rate for an installer to do it for you, but the amount would also vary by installer...

Yes, 100% the registration is free and you can do it yourself. The inspection & required "sign off" is a different story though.
 
Google City of Cape Town solar, on their site there is a document available titled "Requirements for Small-scale Embedded Generation" (SSEG). Look on page 18 under "Professional sign off". It's the inspection by that registered professional that you'll have to pay for.

I see they specifically state "properties within the City of Cape Town electricity supply area" - which I'm not, I'm in West Beach (Blouberg area) and I'm on Eskom supply. Do you know if some or any of this still applies?

I recently added a few panels to my system.

They were JA Solar 545w, priced at R3875 each incl.
Battery is around R70000
Sunsynk 8kw is around R45000
There are extras with the install as well:
1. mounting brackets - around R5000 for 10 panels (i had some portrait and landscape) - brackets, the aluminium bars and the mounting bolt things.
2. 6mm black and red cable - each 50m at R17.50 per meter
3. 6mm earth cable 50m at R 14.00 per meter
4. MC connectors R200

I previously paid for the changeover switch and surge protectors and distribution board (AC side) and a DC solar combiner box with breakers, surge protectors and fuses. Can't remember the cost of that.

Labour was around R7500 for my main system (with COC). It is all the other stuff that adds up. This was a year ago.

Prices 1-4 are current.

Under "Scope" on page 6 of that document referred to, it says that the regulations apply to installations "in the city's Licensed area of supply".
That tells me that it won't apply to you on Eskom direct supply.
Best to double check with any installer who quotes.
