Solar - Rent-to-own - anybody using them?

I'm checking around and there are a few companies around offering "Rent-To-Own" complete solar systems.

anybody using them? how has been your experience?

 
If you intend on owning your solar system outright at the end of the day, rent to own does not make sense financially.. you end up paying a LOT more to own the system Vs paying cash (obviously) or financing through a loan based option..
 
Friends of mine down the road used Versofy for their install. To me it didn't make sense though, works out much more expensive in the long term and also is a bit of a pain if you want to sell your house before the solar contract has expired.
 
I went with Versofy with a deposit. Installation was fine, really really good installer, high-quality Canadian panels and Sunsynk inverter. Cost a bit more cause the DB board was a disaster so i had to pay to re-do the whole thing but given the quotes I had been given to do it vs theirs it was not bad. System is working like a charm, and any problems I have i just log a support ticket. Only had 1 minor issue so far.

If i move my plan is to rent out the house not sell it, so i'll build it into that - however you can request a settlement and simply add it to your for-sale price since you are selling usable assets with residual value.

PS - I should add, that I did get cash prices with the intent of putting it on my bond, and the prices I was quoted were around 10%-15% higher than Versofy's. That said, I know of friends with similar installs who were about 10% cheaper so it goes either way.
 
Rent - if not wanting to own, or handle any maintenance , or happy with paying flat rates
Own - Purchase through your own interest handling but be aware of product life cycles and the possibility of support/maintenance issues etc.

Same argument to owning a home really.
 
oh btw - Versofy also has rental-only options now which i didn't have an option for. So that's not a bad one considering you're just basically "buying" electricity backup without the hassle of owning a depreciating asset. Its also why my next car is going to be leased-only, I do not care for owning anything.

If you don't want it, they come and take it all back. Of course there will be penalties if you get them to install it all and decide you don't want it after 3 months lol.

Worked out to roughly break even in 7 years but then I would think something like batteries etc probably need replacement 10 years etc. Also not willing to deal with maintenance etc etc etc and I do not want additional debt at this time of my life so extending bond or financing.

And TBH if I ever need to go, or the government enacts the type of 99 year lease etc, not wanting to invest large additional in my home now. Siblings of mine are leaving and ALL are taking a knock vs investment on their homes.

IF.. the country went belly-up to the extent that I'm force to emigrate, I also don't care lol. I'll send an email to Standard Bank to ask Cyril for their money and leave. If I can pay them from overseas I will, but it certainly will not stop me getting out of here if the **** really hits the fan.

Yeah but if you have dealings internationally you would be aware that the whole tax and finance is a LOT stricter with normal people ( not Thanbo :p ). So if there was any form of issue locally around private bank or finance, it will now carry with you overseas. I don't need that, my bond is mature enough that its ok even with the rate hikes and I don't want anything near harming or triggering that, got a effective timeline inline with my kids leaving, university and us going on pension.

We have access to EU if necessary so we quite literally can jump on one day and just go. Full social and welfare, not to mention older family holdings that side. No intent though.

Same here, well, no kids etc i think i'm younger then you but I guess the same applies. I could leave the for the EU tomorrow morning, but i'm also settled here and like it here.

True about the tax stuff, i guess the days of bidding adios to your country with a middle finger is not going to be easy anymore lol. Worst case if i did leave i'de rent the property out although there's horror stories with that too...

Yep, as of 2021 I had to declare tax residency to both countries otherwise you are locked out financially.

How do you rate GoSolr? good? bad? any issues to mention? are you happy with the installation? does it cover 4 hours loadshedding?

I've also been with GoSolr for the last 31 days, and have had no issues since.

It actually handles more than the 4 hour loadshedding schedules (during the day) had an issue on Sunday where the electricity did not return at 10am after a 4 hour session due to some outage, battery was already at 100%, Solar powered the house without fail up until 1pm when it eventually came back, then went off again at 2pm for another session of loadshedding.

Really awesome service.

So the experience has been overall positive.

- Kit : 5KVA Deye , 2 x Hubble AM2 and 10 x 460W panels
- Wiring and dbs all neat and professionally done.
- Large team came to do the bulk of the install
- Some minor issues at start but there is a followup team that came through to ensure everything was correct. I had a very old main DB and the previous electricians had some surprised in there. I did not want an additional db next to the main ( there are already two for the installation itself ( AC cutover and DC ) ) so they reaplaced the old breakers with modern ones that made more space. It does look a bit roughish there but my only other option is to replace the entire DB housing and have it refitted in the wall ( no surface mount as its directly above the stove so pretty sure it won't like the heat ).
- The system is split with a load and non essential. For me, non essential is stove/geyser/pool pump and a old aircon. Those are all guzzling appliances. Load has all my plugs and lights including fridges, washing machine, alarm , gate motors etc.
- Load really depends on what you have but for me it runs standard
  • 55" + soundbar
  • Microsever with 6 hdd
  • Gaming machine 700W PSU, 27" monitor, speakers
  • Full size fridge
  • Chest Deep freezer
Those all are around 500W constant. My lights are all LED, so say another 150 for the entire house. If I run my 18kBTU inverter aircon, that adds 800W alone. Kettles , microwave etc all add to that if running.
- For loadsheding, on the dual batteries I am currently using 7 - 9 % a session ( 2 hours ). Thats all the above sans aircon constant. Yes , using kettle and microwave now and then but thats small bursts. Saying that , I reckon I have enough battery backup with a SOC @ 95% for around 7-9 hours depending what I turn on. Comfortably with just lights and electronics, I reckon 10 hours.

During the day, the system also feeds the non-essentials. Like today, my wife baked midday and is running the aircon while watching TV.

But still not touching Grid and she finished her baking before the battery hit the 95% default so we haven't used any grid power and the battery is topping up again.

If you want a timeline ( this is for Durban )

1. Submitted initial request 4th March.
2. Contacted next day, paid deposit.
3. Install date received for 20 March. I did try contact the about doing a pre-site inspection and they were able to even offer me a date of 10th March which I had to decline due to other commitments.
4. 20th was delayed due to the whole strike EFF thing but they came round on the 21st ( which was a holiday ) to drop off kit so they could start on the 22nd.
5. 22nd - 25th hardware installed and partially configured.
6. 29th final check was done and tweaks , installation complete by 29th March.

Bill, exactly the amount, no hidden surprises of Vat or this or that, amount was quoted and amount done. We have not "felt" loadshedding since the 1st of April.

So far, am quite happy. Just working with them and tweaking the system to settings I want to get more "power benefit" out of it. For example, my batteries etc are normally charged latest by 11 and the balance of the solar is just use, which avgs 800 in the day so nowhere else for the generation to go.
 
What limits/restrictions are there on these systems?

"Nothing revs like a rental" comes to mind...

Can you hammer the thing to get max value?

Are there cycle limits on the battery?
How low SOC can I go with it?

Can I fiddle with the inverter settings?
Any implications for doing so?
Can they monitor that remotely?

Wow... nice to hear that... so you are almost "off-grid"... you still have the grid, but you hardly use it...

Only stove and geyser, if I shuffle those right it's far less.

In theory can easily expand later for full OG.
 
Just FYI as I finally got hold of a nice person around the battery settings on offer through the portal. Can still do custom.

MAX Safety:

This setting is recommended for High Load shedding schedules as well as when there is little to low sunlight meaning low production. So, this would entail your battery to maintain a 95% charge with a full grid charge. So, when load shedding does start you have more than enough battery to last through the period. The downside to MAX Safety is that your batteries will be used mainly when there is load shedding or power outages and this setting is not Economical as it does charge from the grid so that you ensure you have sufficient battery power for when Load shedding hits.

Economical:

This setting is recommended for Low Load shedding schedules as well as when there is a lot of sunlight and Solar production. Your batteries will discharge 70% of its capacity into your essential loads and this setting is what is advise for when you do want to have significant change in your Eskom consumption, the downside to this is that because your batteries discharge 70% of its capacity only leaving about 30% in the balance should there be an unforeseen Power outage or Unscheduled Load shedding you may not have sufficient battery power to carry you through the Load shedding period.

Balanced:

This setting is recommended for Low Load shedding schedules as well as when there is a lot of sunlight and Solar production. Your batteries will discharge different quantities into your essential load throughout the day:

This setting also shows quite a significant difference in your Eskom usage however may also be similar in downside as the Economical setting because the batteries are discharging different quantities throughout the day may not retain enough charge to carry you through Load shedding periods or unexpected power outages.
 
More feedback on the battery.

So been running my system on their "balanced" setting" . Been cloudy so not a great start but yesterday was a good sign.

Good sign in that in the max mode, the most battery that is used is 5% ( SOC of 95% ) to protect you on load shedding. Balanced, drops to a minimum of 50% SOC as a load shedding buffer. Their economical setting will go down to 30% SOC but other wise you can contact them for custom settings.

The good thing for me is that previously on that type of day, I would have only stored 5%, which means sure, I get the day savings with the panels but no benefit from the batteries besides load shedding. Now there is regular discharge in the evening and early morning and I was able to recover 35% battery on a cloudyish day, which for me equates to about an additional 3.5Kwh from previous.

I do have my mum staying with us as well at the moment and thats causing my geyser use to spike multiple times a day, normally its just the evening spike. Seriously investigating gas geysers now. Its going to cost me less later, maybe if SARS is nice to my in June I'll action.

There is a telemetry gap in the graph between 10 and about 11:45.
