Remember Hippos breathe a lot through their skin and being in the water solid for all those days probably took it's toll.

OK, sorry.. .I stand corrected. it's not "a lot". Estimates are that some mammals can absorb up to 2% oxygen through their skin.
Obviously this would not have been a factor in the death of the Hippo. But I still say the stress contributed a lot.
