Johannesburg - A young hippopotamus that has been stuck in a swimming pool at the Monate Conservation Lodge in Limpopo since Tuesday has died during a rescue attempt, eNews Channel Africa reported.

The hippo was named Solly after one of his caregivers.

Solly Sibuyi, 30, who has been a game warden at the lodge for nine years, has been feeding the 4-year-old hippo and checking up on him before and after game drives to make sure "he's still okay", Beeld reported.

"Oh, my heart feels sorry for him. I miss him at the dam when I check up on the other hippos," Sibuyi said.

Concerned babysitter Sibuyi also managed the arrival and positioning of a large crane near the pool, which, later on Friday morning, was expected to be used to lift the sedated hippo to safety.

The pool is big enough for the hippo to swim in but it's eight feet deep with no steps, so much of the water has been drained to make extraction easier.

The hippo's mother reportedly gave birth recently, and more dominant males forced him from the herd, so he has to be moved to another sanctuary.

"I'm very happy they can help Solly the hippo. I'm going to miss him, but he must live where he can be safe and happy," Sibuyi said.

Solly the hippo died on Friday morning before an attempt to rescue him from a swimming pool could get underway.

The one ton hippo had been in distress all of Friday morning after his swimming pool was drained in preparation for a rescue operation.

A veterinarian who was hired to tranquilise the animal arrived at the scene nearly four hours late, and couldn't save him.

Solly spent four days in the swimming pool of the Monate game farm in Limpopo, where he landed up after being kicked out by his pod.

Monate's manager Ruby Ferreria said she was very upset with what happened.

"They arrive here late and Solly died. We've been waiting all morning. I'm very heartbroken at the loss of Solly."

Solly had been stuck in the pool since Tuesday.

Thursday’s rescue effort was abandoned after the capture team decided that the water should be drained from the pool before tranquilising the animal.

If rescued, Solly would have left Monate for his new home on a nearby farm where he would have had an entire dam all to himself.

Vet was 4 hours late. Apparently he did not care!

They should have just drained a bit of the water from the pool and dumped a ***** load of sand in there so this hippo could just walk out. Why they had to spend so much cash boggles my mind.

****ing ****s

But they emptied most of the water.

After 4 days yes.
Could have died from exhaustion from previous days or more likely stress related. Wild animals bodies aren't really made to handle stress over long periods of time...

But they emptied most of the water.

Ja, probably stress related. Remember Hippos breathe a lot through their skin and being in the water solid for all those days probably took it's toll.
