Solution to avoid the CAP

Combine your ADSL Service with MWEB Satellite Internet. MWEB-SI has no monthly limitation on download speed, GAURANTEED 64 Kbps download (Average on two of my customers lines in excess of 384 Kbps - International !) and does not affect your 3Gb Cap beacuse of the PPTP-Tunnel created between your PC/Server and a local Satellite Server in Johannesburg. Their Mweb Service costs R3999 for Equipment and Dish, and R325.00 per month in addition to Telkom ADSL (Total of R1205.00 for home users).

I have been using this solution for months now and download in excess of 80 Gigabytes per month. My Clients average around 15 Gigabytes per month.
Another helpful item is that P2P programmes work beatifully and Kazaa downloads up to 20Kb/s (thats PER file depending on number of users/bandwidth/etc...) have been encountered.

Our Personal Office record for download speed on the satellite is over 600kbps (screenshots can be provided).</font id="blue"></i>

R3999 is a bit steep for all the equipment - what exactly is it that you need to set up this type of connection. What if you already have a dish? Guess I should check it out myself

You need a satellite dish and a receiver card. Way back when WOL first started the satellite service they included the equipment free of charge with their two year contract. (Not included anymore). So I'm lucky I have the necessary equipment, but I have no idea how to combine ADSL with the VPN connection.

VQuest, you just connect to ADSL as normal, and then just set up the vpn to WOL and connect to it. I have seen the download bursting up to 2mbits/sec. It works great.

How exacly does the thing work with dstv dish ,I think I read somthing about this somewere but cant remember.

R3999 thats probably for a R3000 usb reciever plus dish. You can get a pci reciever for about R1000. If you alredy got a dish you will probably need a dual LNB upgrade so you can use DSTV at the same time.

I don't know much about networking. How would you, if at all possible, use such a connection over a LAN.

There seems to be a contradiction here. On the one hand the implication is that if I want to do this I buy the satellite dish and connect for downloads directly (so I don't need ADSL at all).

On the other hand this seems to be talking about tunneling locally to an MWEB server in Jo'burg, which wouldn't need a dish at all.

Can someone explain what on earth the OP is talking about?

I think you recieve data via the satellite link and send data via the adsl to the mweb server so far as i remeber.

I'm busy doing some tests at the moment combining satellite and ADSL - will let you know the outcome.

The satellite connection uses your modem to connect and to send data but satellite dish and receiver card to receive data. So you don't need an ADSL line unless you would like to have an "always on" connection. We've established that we're here because we want ADSL, so to find a way around the cap you use satellite with ADSL which bypasses the cap.

Hi please keep my up to date and if it works a short "how to" on how to set up the tunnel. I had to get a second account due to the fact that we run a photographic lab and a lot of customers send their photo's via email to us. Have a satellite but went over to ADSL because my monthly account(Telephone bill) was over R2500 a month. If this works it will solve a lot of problems for me.

I noticed that MWEB have TV ads running right now for this service .....mmmmmmmmm
