Hi Guys

I'm thinking of buying an oldish 4x4 to travel into Africa with.

1.My price range is between R100 - 150K.
2.It won't be used as a daily driver only on weekends.
3.Preferably a diesel as they seem to be a lot more fuel efficient

I would really like to buy a defender but I've heard so many things about them.

thee seems to be a lot of petrol 4x4 around but not a lot of diesel ones.

Any advice?

Old Toyota or Suzuki Jimny.

The Landrovers and Jeeps will bankrupt you.

Ha Ha Ha Asking about a 4x4 vehicle in a computer forum is like going to the butchery and asking for . . . nails :D The human mind - never stops to surprise LOL

Old toyota land cruiser (cab or bakkie) = Indestructible.

You can pick up a very respectable Subaru Forester for that sort of price. Brilliant in sand and mud and better ground clearance than most 4x4 bakkies....plus the beauty of permanent All Wheel Drive...

Time to think out the box...250 000 Aussies cannot be THAT wrong! ;)

If I could afford it, I would buy the S-Edition Forester tomorrow.

Defender, Series 3, Landcruiser or similar

NB: just pick one that has the LEAST amount of onboard electronics.
The country mechanics, farmers, rangers and various other mechanical characters you will encounter in small out of the way places will be able to work on the vehicle in an emergency situation. Especially when you get away from large towns.
Dont ever think you wont break down in Africa.

You mention the fact that the car should be easy to work on, then you suggest a Defender??! :wtf:

Tagging along with this thread. I've joined and read tons on 4x4community but would be nice to see some opinions from the non hardcore 4x4 types that all have a favourite.
Basically I'm keen to get a 4x4 that can go into our neighbouring countries or so, not like central africa etc. Would be a bonus if it was a nice car for jhb etc. The discovery seems to be the best of both worlds. Also like the jeep grand cherokee (the shape just before the one launched this year).

Disco is great. I have the Disco II V8 2003 A/T with central difflock. Bit heavy on the juice but great on and off road. Jeep is VERY expensive to maintain.

Saying that disco is not expensive to maintain?

So true about keeping the thing simple.

1. Guy on sodwana beach with a turbo diesel, car stalled an could not get it going again, nobody could help him.
2. Range Rover in Mozambique, had some type of air shockabsorber that failed, saw it going out after 2 weeks on a flatbed.
