I have been having endless, and I mean endless problems with my ADSL line. Afrihost didn't exactly make things any better with their very bad service and billing system.

That aside. Long story short:

Initially get 2mbps ADSL line installed, never get anything more than 1.2 mbps. Ask AH to upgrade to 10 mbps, one whole big schpeele later and it is updated to 10mbps. Cant get anything more than 1.6mbps.

Throughout the process, AH/Telkom and my router said attainable rate is 10mbps. AH says 4, Telkom says 6, now router says 7. But the router has synced from anything from 1.56mbps to 4mbps (current). Miracles happen and AH logged a line fault with Telkom. Telkom rocks up here today at 11:30 :wtf:, the tech tests the line and says there is noise on the line. He can't fix noise cause folks who has the main pole in their yard aren't home. So he'll try again on Tuesday. He also says won't get more than 4. I told him that I previously had a stable 6mbps line here. He says ok, then it's possible.

So ATM I don't know where I stand, the only thing I do know is that AH is happily billing me for a 10mbps line and my line has now reached the point where I can't even connect or use the internet at 1.16mbps anymore, I am back on my 8ta 3G. I have read the forums, but I don't understand the tech stuff. I am posting my router stats here with the hope that someone in the know will be able to shed some light. I am ready to move to Canada. This is just one big mess. Telkom D-link ADSL Router DSL 2750U

Looking at you attachment.

A. Your SNR & Attenuation rates are exceptionally high.
B. HEC errors are low, but could be a problem.

Is there any noise, crackling noise, on the line when you use the handset?

I had a recent problem with all the rain, the box on the pole where the line cables are connected that then comes to your house got wet inside. Had to get Telkom twice out to sort it out.

Don't know if anybody else can add a comment.

If it is a problem with noise on the line then your fight will be with Telkom, unless everything is going thorugh AH.

Thanks for the reply.

Is this good or bad? No really, that's how stupid I am, I don't know what it means.

There isn't a crackling noise. It's more like a constant buzzing noise, but not exceptionally loud. I never even had a handset, the guy from Telkom let me listen when he was there on Sunday with that cool blue phone they use.

Well everything is through AH, but they managed to get Telkom out there. The guy from Telkom didn't even want to look at the box on the pole in my yard. He went straight to the main pole, where the people weren't home. So he said he will try today to see if he can get access to their property.

TBH, with my no know-how on these things, I can't think that the amount of noise on the line could make it behave this erratically, but once again, for all I know, it can.

I was hoping that these line stats may give some answers. Like I said, don't know if distance from exchange is the issue as I previously had a stable 6mbps line.

Your SNR and Attenuation rates are bad, very bad. That is why you have the constant connection problems. I reckon it's more a physical problem and needs a Telkom tekkie to resolve the problem.

The problem is most probably between the exchange box and the connection within the box on the pole. Good luck, I struggled for more than a month with Telkom to resolve the problem.

No my other problem is ISP related, it's on ongoing battle to have internet access in the country.

Ok, thanks for letting me know. This is what I also understood from what I read on the forums, but because I know so little, I wanted someone to confirm my suspicion. At some point I thought they may have multiplied it with 100, i.e. left out a decimal somewhere. LOL.

I know.

@werfi

They are not that high. You need to divide those numbers by 10.

See attached pic of my D-Link router.DLINK.jpg

Could also be you are to far from the exchange?

If they sort you out with the line noise. Post another router pic.

hmmmm... well that changes the picture then.

Again... don't know as it worked fine previously on 6mbps. unless the hardware deteriorated somewhere.

I see two obvious differences from your pic and mine.

The output power difference... and the mode. Mine says ADSL_g.dmt and yours says ADSL_2plus... any ideas how this may affect it?

well if the people with the pole need to be there for the engineer to do his work, then go to the people and explain your situation and arrange a meeting.

the Telkom guy said there is noise on the line and he needs to get to the pole...

Hmmmm... so overnight, this picture changed a bit... Am i right, its better? speeds are much better, on certain servers on speedtest.net I get 7mbps
