Some data still comes through to my phone without data

I've noticed that I still receive twitter notifications on my iPhone on mtn and I have no data. Even WhatsApp messages comes through now and again. Anyone know why this happens? Very strange and interesting.

Had this problem with wives phone at Vodacom, had to ask them to stop it, it chew up all her call money in no time.
