Some DSTV channels don't work.

So my girlfriend tried to watch The Style Network on Friday but it doesn't work. It just gives the "unable to connect, try and rescan" message.
I called Multichoice and they just told me to tell them my dish installation settings, confirmed that its correct and told me to rescan.

The problem was still there. Then I noticed that some other channels give the same message. Like National Geographic, Soweto Tv and some others. So the DSTV guy said that there might be a problem with the "transport stream" or something and that they'll sort it out in a few hours. But of course its not working today(Monday). But I got the feeling that he just wanted to get rid of me because he doesn't actually know whats wrong.

So can anybody please suggest a solution. I don't want to call an installer to come out and tell me that he doesn't know whats wrong but that I need to pay him R400 anyway.

Some info.
= Its a central complex dish
=signal strength is about 35% and quality is about 80%
= The el-cheapo decoder , about 6 months old
= Set to 9960 instead of 9750 for the complex(no Idea what this is, but DSTV confirmed it as correct.)

Never tried to watch the Style network or Soweto Tv so I don't know if it recently stopped working or not but National Geographic worked a week ago.

Any ideas?

:eek: I'm sitting at over 80%? Quality 100% - I installed the dish myself, with the handy ol cellphone, scream and adjust method.

That sounds VERY low.
 
Are you using a Dual View decoder? If so, you will most probably get a single feed from the dish, with that little splitter thingie plugged into the back of the decoder ... there's your problem if the above Dual View assumption holds. It has got something to do with the Verticals and Horizontals. I have the same issue ... cabled DStv, with one cable coming in ... some of the channels can't be viewed
 
Some channels come on the Horizontal frequency and some come on the Vertical one.

Normally the LNB ( the little focus point device that sits in the dish) has to switch to H or V depending on what channel you are watching.

Now with a shared dish I don't know how this works cause you might need it to be on V frequency but your neighbour needs it to be on H.

I think your Set to 9960 instead of 9750 might be a part of this but I have no idea how they achieve it
 
There are many different settings for LNB and Network if you are sharing a central dish. The company who installed the central dish, or who maintains it will need to give you the appropriate settings. DSTV help wont be able to give you the answers you need.

Landy: I don't have Duel View, only the cheap little gray decoder. But I suspect it might have something to do with the LNB or the way the Verts and Horz are handled by our communal dish system as other people have said the same thing.

I guess I'll have to get the complex appointed DSTV guy to come and check it out, but I don't want to risk paying R400 if he justs comes and shrugs.

Alternatively, does someone have the installation settings for the Horz and SMT-tv so that I can confirm them aswell?

Do they have any sort of booster jacking up the signal coming from the dish?

How many households are sharing its signal?
 
Ya i have the same problem.

Would also like to know if anyone knows the correct settings and paramaters just to double check if mine is like it should be.

I am using a PVR btw.

I had the same problem (but I live in a house, so there is no sharing and have a PVR). Could not pick up some of the channels. Phoned DSTV, and someone told me that the dish's allignment might be out.

Called a number of places, all tried to sell me LNB units and whatnot, till the one came out, adjusted the dish, and bam, working fine.

Are you the only one experiencing the problem, or are other people too?
 
I lost tv channels not due to a dish/LNB issue but due to corroded cable connections. I have 2 cables joined together with a connector which had rusted. Improved my signal 10-15% on replacement of cable and connections and all channels restored.
 
Anyone solve the problem?

I also have a complex satellite. My channels where working, then after the rains last week I have lost E!, Animax, FTV, and a bunch more.

I've lost those exact ones as well, they all seem to be on a simliar frequency. Also: Animal Planet and C & I.
 
You lost C & I? :(

That's one of the best channels ...
 
400 bucks damn

i only got charged 250 when they came out a week or so ago

400 bucks seems way to much if you ask me
 
Yea place around the corner gave me a verbal quote of beteen 350-400 to install a 2nd DSTV point
 
This is a common problem and happens frequently on the DSD990.
Switch off at the plug for 30 seconds and turn on again. Should be right as rain (until the next time).
