Hi All,

I need some information about which ISP to use.
We've been looking @ Imperial Online and Datapro.
I need an uncapped, fixed IP solution that will work with VPN's.

I also have to decide whether to get a 512Kb or 1Mb solution.
Would a 512Kb solution from a decent ISP compare to a Telkom 1Mb ?

Thanks
Barry

Hi Barry!! Do you need the accounts only for VPN purposes?
You must remember that your VPN speed will be the upload speed ie if you have a 512k line your max vpn speed will be 256k, if youhave a 1meg line the speed will be 384k. The speed needed depends on your application you want to run over the wan.. What kind of modem/routers are you planning to use?

Get openweb

Their support is the best and their packages are extrmely affordable

Hi xdsluser / headstrong

No, its not only for vpn, for web browsing and maybe even voip too.
We've got some Zyxel and Dlink routers.
The VPN's are only from client machines to VPN servers - it will be a
visitor based network.

Are IS accounts faster than normal SAIX ones?

(Do the openweb accounts have fixed IP's?)

Thanks

OpenWeb.
Good service, myADSL regular, good prices, innovative packages, no long term contracts, big (local) caps.

Should you decide to go SAIX rather than IS, what ever you do, DO NOT, repeat DO NOT use Telkom Internet. The beast is fat enough on our blood.

If you are going to use IS accounts, which will be the best for the cheap local traffic, first test a vpn with one account! VPN's are generally slower when run over IS accounts, but the speed might still be OK for you.

I run 2 VPNs over IS and dont have a problem with speed at all.

Actually, I find it faster than SAIX, so I dont know where you got that info from.

hmmm, although I really want to agree on this, I can't ...

telkominternet, you get like 8-12 GB for R250, other ISP for 8-12 GB you pay min R500, from which at least R400 go for telkom ... so if you go direct to telkom internet they make R250 from you, if you go through another ISP they will make R400 from you for the same service ... unfortunate reallity! Proudly South African!

I did not say dont use IS for VPN, I said test it before you do!! We run hundreds of VPN's over Saix, IS, Sentech, IBurst, whatever is available. IS accounts can not compare to SAIX accounts for VPN's. IS uncapped (over Satelite) espesially are the worst possible way to go if you want to VPN between branches!!

Then you are part of the problem and simply wasting your time on this forum.

We really have no choice when it comes to ADSL by getting it from the sole supplier Telkom but at least we have choice by supporting the smaller ISP's in surviving in the market against Telkom Internet.

But then there are a lot of loudmouths on this forum who bitch and moan at Telkom at every opportunity but then they use Telkom as their ISP because of the supposed "free" extra gigs they get.

Now how do you understand that ... put your money where your ****ing mouth is I say.

if you are going to d/l a lot you might as well use the 1024 line. the new price will be almost the same as the current 512k line. Also your bw charges are only affected by line speed on the uncapped accounts.

as far as ISP, go with the guys that you feel comfortable with. right now with ISs problems they and SAIX are comparable in quality.

I have a SAIX account and use VOIP and play WoW without any proxies.

The bigger problem that you should worry about is your account security.
There are more and more cases of accounts being hacked. This can be a fault on your side (bad security) or could be the ISPs fault, when their security measures are useless. In most cases the ISP will tell you that account security is your problem, so be carefull with that.

Your secondary concern should be pricing/affordability.

LorMerlin,

I would appreciate it if you seize the name bashing on this forum.

You did NOT give OpenWeb a chance to respond to your querie, before you started destroying our name.

I will totally disagree with that statement: http://www.hellopeter.co.za/details.asp?id=66873

Don't even consider them if your business relies on ADSL, and you on the support of the ISP

There's nothing "supposed" about it.

Guys, please be fair and always give the service providers in question time to respond to you. Especially if you know they have a representative on the forum. Just PM or email them the link to your thread querying whatever. :)

If they don't respond within a reasonable amount of time (a day or so) then hammer on until you get peace. Email the service provider and post your correspondence etc. Be clever about it. Don't just blindly try to seek and destroy. This forum can be abused to hurt service providers without warrant.

We are looking for win-win outcomes. Not win-lose or lose-lose. :)
