Hi all,

I bought myself a rather nice Desktop system last week, and guess what... it included W7! Down side... It was the Starter edition. I came across an article somewhere on the Web where the author called it "The most evil thing Microsoft has ever come up with"

That's true... It features.......... NOTHING!!

Although, for those of you that don't know, W7 includes a nifty upgrade feature called Anytime Upgrade. All you need is a key code, and 10 minutes. Voila! You now have a choice between Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional or Windows 7 Ultimate. The absolute full versions.

So yup, I opted for Professional, and now I'm inching for Ultimate.

My only worry is that I installed a patch called 'WAT21'. It removes the 'Windows Activation Technologies' feature, thus Windows will never bother you with Activations again.

So... the problem? - I'm not sure if it'll be safe for me to upgrade to W7 Ultimate WITH the WAT patch installed. (I cannot find a way to remove it either).

Any tips??

Ciao...

At work I use Professional, at home I use Ultimate.

You're better off with Professional buddy, really, Ultimate doesn't really feature anything you actually NEEEED or will USSSSEE anytime soon.

If I could (in a perfect world) I'd take my Ultimate back, get the money difference and goto Professional.

Better yet Home Premium, it isn't that expensive when you consider the price people pay for other software packages and gadgets.

Windows 7 Starter edition. Ouch.

The Vista Starter edition was just as nasty....only supported 1 CPU, no Aero interface & only 3 apps can be running at the same time.

I still dont know why Microsoft bothered with this crap, as in most emerging markets, what the product is apparently for, they all run Ubuntu Linux for free. They don't buy software. Eva.

Only differences between Windows 7 Professional & Ultimate are the bitlocker drive encryption and multiple language packs. And that is it.

Get yourself Windows 7 Professional, or Home Premium, if you're not gonna connect your pc to any domains.

Run the RemoveWAT application again and it should have an option "Restore WAT"... I've had to do this to countless clients' machines when trying to do the upgrade. Once you've removed it, just run the anytime upgrade and it's sorted.
