We are 3 in our office (2 non-afrikaans speaking and 1 afrikaans speaking).
There's this woman, a customer actually, who came here, twice now.
And all the time she comes, she greets so friendly and warmly the afrikaans speaking one (not that they are friends or something) in afrikaans of course, make few jokes and laugh (women thing), then go to the bottom of the office (Its a rectangle office), passing the 2 other people without even greeting them and sit next to her, so that she can show her some work.
I mean does "Hello" costs a thing?

Well, the going rate was R37.46 last time I checked.

(Alternatively, if you don't want to queue for official "Hello's" I know someone who can get you one for R50 on the black market)

I don't know why, but people are *******s, especially like this. My current gf has had such bad experiences with Afrikaans people EXACTLY about this situation that it blows my mind.

Since the IRC days, whenever I met up with friends from there, we all kept it English even if only 1 of us were English speaking because we strive to include them in all conversation and make them feel part of the group.

A "hello" costs nothing, I still can't fathom why people do this (see my "they are *******s" comment). It's never been my experience and my group of friends never does this, not even my parents. It's sad to be honest.

Sounds like you have a general problem with Afrikaans people.

True, she's not here to be my friend or anyone else's.
I think me greeting her with a kind of smile on my face is beeing friendly enough to her. You, on the other hand, are the one who needs to grow up and know that "Hello" is not for friends only.

LoL yeh whatever dude

Judging by your attitude I can see why she doesn't greet you ... 12 year old in a grown up's body ...

She probably doesn't like you and its understandable why ...

If I walk into a office (client or not) I will only greet people that greets me until I get to the person I made my appointment with and greet him/her first. I dont know any of them or there to see them why should they expect a hello from me. Now most of this companies are corporates with about 40 people sitting on the way to the person I am having a meeting with. Should I greet all of them as I walk past .... no that's just stupid .... however if someone greets me then ofcourse I will extend the courtesy and have a quick chat.

If a client walks into my company I expect my staff to be friendly and greet them first where appropriate. It makes the client feel welcome to the office and gives of a warm and happy impression.

I however do not expect any of my clients to walk in and greet anyone first cause my staff member greeted them once 3 months ago. All the staff should be clever enough to have this basic social skills to greet a client when they walk into the office.

You are there to work not to make friends.

Like I say grow up ....

PS: Go and speak to your boss about this and see what he/she says about the fact that you are offended that a client doesn't say hello ...

I think you are mistaking the people on this forum for someone who gives a flying Duck. O and btw the begger at the robot didn't
say hello to me this morning and i am crushed who does he think he is and he kinda looked afrikaans too :wtf:

I greet anything that moves, even in the street. There is a colleague who never greets white people on principle (and yes I know this because her friend told me), so I make it a point of principle to greet her every time I see her. She HATES it. So being nice is also a way of getting at someone. Very useful.

Seems a little petty to me personally, there are bigger things to be worrying about. :)

This is why increasing numbers of people hate their jobs. Lots of stress and then their colleagues are pricks on top of it.

Nope, you misunderstand me..

with work colleagues, its all friendly etc.. these are people i work with every day.

When I walk into a shop or business that I plan on doing business in.. then I greet the people I will be interacting with, not every tom dick and harry that works there.

So... a customer, who obviously has a relationship of some sort with one of your co-workers, greets her and proceeds to discuss work-related items with said person... and you feel offended that she does not greet you?

Good grief...

If I had to whine about all the people that never greeted me when coming to our offices for meetings, in the boardroom I sat alongside, I'd have gone insane a long time ago.

Honestly, I've actually not seen that...

Most places I go to regularly, the work colleagues are all quite friendly with each other and such...
