Hi there,

I have some questions about ADSL in SA :

* is there any fixed term contracts invloved with ADSL (i.e. 12 months) If any , what is the cancellation costs if you want to terminate within that time

* anyone here with IS (internet solutions) ? Do they offer the same kind of package to end users, because I see they have quite good international peerings.

* also, can you use any adsl modem/router with Telkom or do they even limit you to their crap Marconi modems ? I have a 4 port ethernet adsl router which i plan to take over to SA with me.

* and finally, do you only notice a considerable drop in speeds when you have reached the cap or is the low speeds just an everyday thing ?

Thanks for your time ... and I hope their will be some competition for Telkom in the near future ... (but honestly, I dont think it will happen in my lifetime [:)] )

Cheers

no there is no fixed term contract you can check out telscums site www.telkom.co.za but there is a installation fee.

telkom are the cheapest isp

im not sure about that but i cant see why it wont work

there is no international speed to talk about when u hit the cap,you wont be able to surf outside sa servers.

and yes it wont happen in your lifetime

uhmmm
i can warn u now,,,, your gonna **** urself at our adsl when u come here comapred to urs

u will be able to use ne adsl modem,, to my knowledge there isnt a fixed period but hey its telkom,,, so that could cahnge ne time

**** slo after cap,, fine b4 cap,, fine as in better than the otha available options,, but then again if u plan on gaming online,, unless u go to local servers,, it basically wont work,, thanks to port capping kazaa aint gonna work either

dont know about the other isps but on kazaa i average about 12-15kb/s [V]average and iv peaked to only 27kb/s(i was so amazed at that i took a pic)[V]im with mweb

To answer your first question - there is no contract if you use Telkom as your ISP, but apparently Worldonline makes you sign a 12 month contract - as per their website.

Hi all

I sell ADSL accounts from Internet Solutions, i can garuntee you that the price that i offer is cheaper than Telkom. it might be only a couple of rands, but every "R" helps. Regarding international peering, i have noticed that that are faster that TELKOM/SAIX. Also i noticed that you only get capped when reaching 4 GIG. (Maybe a mistake on their side). I do a huge amount of downloads from microsoft.com and found that i get better speeds that the rest.Althou we all go across the same infrastructure.
[:D]

oblix, can you email me some prices for IS adsl products ??

also, i might have it wrong , but over here, if you have a adsl product from a certain ISP you are using there IP address space, so you use the peering connections they have with other isps , exchange points , etc..

BUT, i guess in south africa with the lovely telkom, all the isps just resells the telkom adsl product and so you will always have a telkom ip address and in turn you will always use telkom routes ... which sucks .....

i have done a few AS lookups and general traceroutes from the UK to the IS address space does not go through the telkom AS.

I know you will always use the telkom infrastructure locally , but UUNET and IS seems to have their own international links , which will be faster than telkom (i hope) ???

They still use Telkom's ATM Network for ADSL, and thus they still simply resell Telkom's ADSL Services.

The last I heard, IS ran a pilot, and decided it was not profitable to run their own infrastructure, as Telkom is making this way to expensive. So as far as I know, IS is simply reselling Telkom's Accounts. Just like MWEB, just like any other ISP in SA currently.

SAVAGE, as i am one of their resellers i have asked them to shed some light on this topic, even if the accounts is from telkom (Origionally) it is still sheaper than a normal account from telkom. plus i can sell more that one account to a user. The last i heard Telkom will only supply one account per user.

My understanding is also that all ISP's are resellers of the Telkom ADSL service. Everyone uses the same ATM infrastructure which finally terminates at SAIX where the international link is established.

I have subscribed to an alternative ISP as well purely to test this and I can assure you that the speeds are the same on both.

I am against the selling of additional accounts purely on the basis that it does not solve the overall ADSL problems, in fact it makes it even worse. This is based on the fact that Telkom have stated that they will not increase international bandwidth and by adding more accounts you are increasing the contention ratio, international in particular, which leads to worse speeds.

On the one hand we cry that Telkom should stop adding more clients to ADSL to sustain decent contention ratios and on the other hand we go and order more accounts. Sure, we can say that we will only use one account at a time, but this is in the user's hand and who can guarantee that.

Selling second accounts is a way for the ISP's to make profit and I believe they are acting irresponsibly. If you complain to your ISP about the service they just shrug their shoulders and say it's Telkom's service. A service they are happy to sell you many times over. If I were an ISP, I would refuse to sell ADSL to anyone!!

Does this mean that none of the other ISPs connect to the Telkom ADSL BRAS? I always thought the model is/would be that all ADSL traffic is routed from the various DSLAMs over the Telkom ATM backbone to the BRAS. From there it would be routed onto the relevant ISPs infrastructure including international links?
