Hello all,

I have 2 issues I am posting about today.

1. After yet again being capped this month, I decided that it may as well be time to look for alternative sollutions. Asking around a bit I was advised to attempt using a proxy server. Searching around a bit I tried using cache.saix.net and an mweb server. Unfortunately it seems that both these servers are reserved for the sole use of non-adsl users. My questions in this regard are rather simple, is anyone here using a proxy server? and if so, what is the address of said server?

2. Friday night I was using my adsl without any problems, I had already been capped since monday, but did not experience any severe degradation of service. Eventually I went to bed with everything in perfect working order. To my amazement though, when I got up on Saturday morning I was unable to view any websites, connect to any IRC servers, use any telnet software...in short, anything that required the use of a DNS server was not working. I could tracert and ping IP address' I knew, but as soon as an address had to be resolved I couldn't use it.

Firstly I called Mweb as they are my ISP and was very politely told there isn't much they could do and was given Telkom's ADSL support line number.

Called Telkom and explained the problem, ran through a bunch of small tests which in the end simply proved I had a problem. After about 20 minutes of trying different options the support technician simply asked me to change the DNS addresses for my TCP/IP connection from automatic to 196.25.1.11 and 196.43.1.11 after which I was able to use my adsl to some grade again. I asked for an explanation of this occurance and was told that because the Telkom ADSL modems are made in Taiwan they tend to reset to the DNS originally set on them from time to time but with the DNS's I set now it should all be fine. Unfortunately for me this only seemed to have lasted a day and while I still have some form of connectivity everything is extremely slow. I have been capped before and know what it entails, in my current situation though I am waiting 30-40 minutes for any websites to load, national as well as international. Could anyone possibly help me with this situation? Should I try and manually reset my modem and hope for the best?

Thanks for any response you may give,
Arzy

Just something on question 1... I gather M-Web is your ISP... I am not sure how traffic is routed via ADSL as it seems that Telkom controls everything with ADSL.. but you should be able to use your ISP's proxy. I am an M-Web user and I use there CPT proxy server. This seems to only be a http/ftp proxy. I am sure they have others. Phone and ask them.

Only problem though is that I don't think that this ADSL traffic goes thru there network. It is probably a reselling of the Telkom product with the VAS (Value Added Service) that M-web provide. Probably just a different authentication server or realm. So I doubt any of this will help..
