Need some help as I know nothing about these things.
So my son have a few planted fish tanks that need lights to go on and off during the day. Now I know you can just put timers on it, but he has mentioned before about wifi smart plugs, so I am thinking of maybe getting him started with something for his birthday.
So how does it work? Can you just buy smart plugs and operate them from your phone. Do you need a central Hub thingy that control them all? Does the constant on and off from load shedding interfere with these things?
I have an Apple tv that I think can control smart devices, but don't know if the Apple stuff are way more expensive than other.

Also I don't know your son but if my dad got me a fscking plug for my birthday I'd be livid

Get him a remote control car or something.
Well he have had plenty of rc cars drones etc over the years. I actually don't know what to buy. Was thinking more than just a plug. LOL maybe a few plugs:ROFL:

Buy him something to run Home Assistant on, something that is low power.
That way, he can link his plugs to that and start building automations.
If he is into that he can automate your house for you! :p

Only reason I recommend this for you, is how the 3d printing journey turned out. HE sounds like a smart kid, much smarter than you :P

Well with that conclusion I suggest you tell me what the something is that I must buy, as I don't know anything about something.

Either a raspberry pi or a small form pc. For this I wouldnt recommend a NUC (I recommend it for serious setups).
But any 2nd hand IBM small form pc etc is what you could look for if you dont find a raspberry pi 3/4 in stock.

I would absolutely jizz my pants if my dad got me something like that.

Will there be any issues to be aware of once or after LS occurred? Asking on behalf of the son of the not so bright dad

But is a Nuc better. Because it seems I can get secondhanf Nuc’s for cheaper than rasberry pi’s.

What about this. It seems that it works without a hub. But is also compatible with Homekit so the Apple tv can connect to it
