Someone I know wants to move to streaming.

He basically wants the following:

British shows (they are from England).
International sport (F1 Grand Prix, soccer, rugby etc) They don't really care about the local stuff.
Series.
Movies.

What would you suggest?

Everything from ISP to streaming services mind you.
I was also thinking of setting them up with a news host + server

Says DSTV is boring them to death with repeats (even with a PVR).

Have a look at XBMC http://www.tvaddons.ag/

The Genesis addon will give you movies & series.
The FTV addon will give you UK TV channels & extra from http://www.filmon.com/

Crystal Web is best for streaming. ;)

Possibly you could look at an Android TV box from AV Supply everything is already installed virtually Plug'n'Play.

My first foray into streaming was the £10 NowTV box (a rebranded roku) which gave me access to their streaming service (movies and entertainment) as well as Roku apps like BBC's iPlayer and Sports, channels 4 & 5, and iTV. I also side loaded plex onto it. Unfortunately no Netflix app on that device so I eventually switched over to two full Rokus so I could have that.

I stream with Telkom uncapped (10mbps) and subscribe to unotelly.

is there a monthly subscription for the now tv? i'd like to get more sports content, i have a roku 3, and no sports at all... don't really want to pay too much for it either

Their sports package is ridiculously expensive imo but I don't watch sports so it's no biggie for me. They have separate subscriptions for their Movies and their Entertainment (TV) services. The thing I like about the entertainment package is it gives me access to many of their live tv channels including Disney and Discovery.

sure you have to wait a bit, but I was watching saturday night's Doctor who episode 2.5 hours after it aired. yes I downloaded it yesterday, because some things i want to keep for ever.

currently still on telkom, because I have not picked an ISP yet. I am really looking for suggestions on that one as well.

the set up I am going for, in about 2 weeks time:
2 meg line (only option)
ISP that is deemed best, currently between afrihost capped, web africa, cybersmart and telkom (they have impressed me in the last two weeks)
non smart TV with HDMI port.
mini PC with wireless mouse and keyboard plugged in to the TV on HDMI and into the router via LAN cable (wifi is an option, but the cable is already there)
Browser with Adblock for streaming,
Bittorrent
external hard drives plugged in.

from couch, dictate what will be torrented, and what will be streamed via thin client.
 
@AstroTurf: I have the MXIII android media player from AVSupply (~R1200) that patrick123 mentioned. It comes preloaded with XBMC and many of the most popular add-ons and IPTV channels. You can watch all of the BBC and ITV channels live via the FTV add-on as he mentioned and also via the vdubt25 and bbts IPTV add-on. I can also use the 1channel and ProjectFreeTV add-ons to watch almost any movie or TV show. In addition I can stream HD movies and TV shows via one of the preinstalled web browsers from www.usdrama.net and www.shush.se. The USDrama website has 600+ of the latest US TV series updated daily like Game of Thrones, Gotham, The Voice, Dancing with the Stars etc. etc. I have also installed the instant torrent service time4popcorn which has a huge library of the latest movies and TV shows.

You can also watch downloaded content via a network, a hard drive or a flash drive as the device includes a very capable media player (up to 4K resolution in many cases) with excellent picture quality.

Tell your friend to test the streaming performance from the following websites using a web browser on a fairly modern PC so that he knows what to expect.
www.shush.se (Movies and TV shows)
www.usdrama.net (600+ of the latest TV shows - may need to sign up for a free account)
http://www.filmon.com/tv/live (BBC 1,2,3,News,Parliament, ITV 1,2,3,4 Channel 4,5 etc. etc.)

Sports is a tough one.

I wouldn't recommend XBMC add-ons to anyone new to streaming, they're just going to get frustrated.

I'm thinking of setting up streaming for sport (from a uk service perhaps) iPlayer for BBC (about as important as the streaming) and then the rest with a news host+provider.
That way he only needs one vpn/uk proxy.


I'll end up setting the lot up for him.

There's a separate roku app for BBC Sport that is equally impressive.

Easiest thing to do is setup up with Netflix Uk and www.ntv.mx for sport.

With Unotelly you get access to BBC iplayer and Netflix UK has tonnes of BBC content.

You won't needs newshosts at all if you setup everything properly.

Unotelly supports everything you could ever want and let's you change Netflix regions too.
 
Netflix+Unotelly.

For Sports I stream the events from various sporting links available for live coverage. Not via the TV but on the PC to the projector. Lots of betting sites have live sport feeds you can tap into ;)
 
Whats the quality like on NTV if you have say a 4mb line?
