Hi guys.

I only received my ADSL line mid December 2006. I'm not at the office at the moment but I see that someone has used about 300MB of my data since the 1st of January 2007. My PC and ADSL modem is switched off so no-one is able to access it.

I use Telkominternet. Does anyone have any explination? If this is going to happen then I'm definately going to get myself a different ISP.

Thanks guys.

Hey Piesang,

If you are indeed certain there are no legitimate computers that currently have access to the account and you have reviewed the traffic logs on your ISP website then you possibly do have unauthorized access to the account.

Please be aware that this can happen with any ISP and is not the fault of TelkomInternet or Telkom SA Ltd. I would recommend you to immediately verify the possibility of someone accessing your modem or router using a default username and password.

Change both your router password and ISP password for security reasons immediately, preferably before doing the above make sure you have antivirus updates installed and all security patches for your respective operating system to prevent possible keyloggers or worms that can steal such details and sensitive e-mails.

TelkomInternet certainly would co-operate and assist you to make your account the most secure possible.

Thanks for the reply.

My modem is switched off so no-one is able to access it. The only PC connected to the modem is my own desktop PC which is also password protected and switched off.

So then that means that someone is using my details to access the internet. It's only me and the person who gave me the details over the phone that has got my log-in details.

I'm receiving adslfeedback e-mails everyday that is how I found out that someone is using my bandwidth.

Hi again,

TelkomInternet usage statistics are horribly inaccurate most of time. It will put previous day's usage on two or three days later. Verify accurate information on http://userstats.adsl.saix.net

If the information above shows there is usage on days that is simply not possible change your password on the account at http://www.telkomsa.net keeping in mind the virus risk I said before.

If strange usage continues after you have taken the following actions contact TelkomInternet on 10215 and request that they look into it.

Thanks

I'll give them a call on Monday when I'm back at the office. My usage is suppose to be 0MB because I haven't use my ADSL since the 24th of December 2006. I'm using my MTN data card because I'm on holiday.

The virus thing is out of the question. I do a virus update and spyware update everytime I switch my PC on.

Is it possible for Telkominternet to track down someone that use someone else's account?

I would change the password immediately if I were you.
The only person that needs to know the password is you. No one else.
Try and monitor the logins on the SAIX URL already supplied and determine if there is a trend as to what is going on, maybe at the time the login is active phone TI to trace, or escalate to SAIX.

hmm, a switched off router is impossible to get credentials from afaik. so it could be telkom's lovely and super accurate metering?

There have been instances of account harvesting (especially if the ISP is unsecure), so you're router doesn't even come into play.
Haven't heard of any happening in the last while but anything is possible.

vIP Lock & vIP Secure

I am now using the following features from Axxess and it works like a charm !

vIP Lock - Enabling your ADSL account to be locked to your ADSL line reducing the risk of account abuse.

vIP Secure - Will block unwanted traffic to ports on your ADSL router.

First thing I did this morning when I got to the office was changing my password. I just hope it doesn't happen again. Over 300MB was "stolen" from my account.

If this happens again I'll definately report it.
