Hello all MyBB users!

I am an avid online gamer and have been using Telkom's ADSL (The only ADSL line provider) in conjunction with Afrihost as my ISP. Recently (about 3 weeks ago) I started experiencing some very irritating issues on my ADSL line. My ping and packet loss on international games would go from a respectable 180ms, 0% loss and shoot up to figures of ~900ms and up to 50% loss.

I had a friend in the area about 2 weeks ago who was using the ADSL at his friend's house in Somerset West and while we were gaming and talking on Teamspeak with a bunch of our other friends, we would get disconnected at exactly the same time for no reason, we figured that they were working on the exchange (it was late, about 11PM) so we figured what the hell and continued playing when the connection resumed.

But recently I have been having connection issues again. Now, data throughput is not a problem (which is why I suspect that Telkom aren't getting very many reports of faulty ADSL in. But when the exchange starts getting a bit congested ping and packet loss goes ballistic. The problem only really happens between 5 and 11 PM (when everybody gets home... duh)

What I'd like for those of you who are connected to the 021 851 exchange to do for me please is to run a traceroute and a pingtest to telkom.co.za for me during the course of the evening tomorrow (if it crosses your mind) and please post results here so that I can present them to Telkom as definitive proof that the problem is not isolated to me and that the exchange's bandwidth allocation needs to be increased or some other action needs to be taken.

I'm at my wits end here, it is extremely frustrating for me not being able to do what I enjoy all the while I am still paying for it.

Hope to get results and solutions soon!

Regards

Alright, thread is a scrub, clearly nobody else having problems... Now I have to kiss telkom's ass to fix the problem.

I wonder...

I have been experiencing problems for 2 years now in Somerset West. Moved addresses, changed ISPs, tried different machines - everything.

But I have these weird lag spikes, where I will have perfect ping (affects both local and international) and then out of no where, every 10 minutes or so, it spikes up to 600+ms for 5 seconds, then drops off again. And keeps repeating. So I'll be playing a game and suddenly have massive pullback and try avoid dying for 5 seconds until my ping stabilizes again. I am not sure whether it's the same problem. But if you want to compare when you have issues, feel free to drop me a PM.

We could schedule a time where we could run a 30 minute Ping Plotter test and compare results. If the spikes occur at the same times, we can assume it's an exchange/Telkom issue.

I've tried every avenue I can to try and resolve this in the past.
