Something weird going on with my 20d.

Actually I don't really stick to one thing. Photography is my hobby and I now have a bit more time on my hands so I want to see how far I can go with it. I am by no means anywhere near pro level.

What I would like to do is some architecture, candid portraiture, some landscape.

I'm probably going to stick with my 20d for quite some time as the "red dot" is really easy to fix now I know it's there.

P.S. I'm as creative as a brick so I'm trying to become creative. :o
 
Sounds a bit like me. I'll probably stick to my 50D for some time too, although I'm eager to get better glass. That said, if either Canon releases that rumoured 3D (basically 7D with FF) or a 5DmkIII with better AF and pop-up flash, or Nikon pulls their finger from their ass and makes a 24-105L equivalent, the 50D will be looking for a new owner in no time.

Swifty, Adorama has some pretty good prices for used 20d bodies and I tell you what. Even with the "red dot of death" it's still an awsome camera. I think for the next year or two I will stick it out with the 20d but add a few non EF-S lenses to my kit. Just in case, if you know what I mean. :)
 
FSCK!!!!!!

I was trying to take some pictures of the fireworks tonight and what do you know!!! With a almost black backgound across most of the picture I have 12 hot pixels. Blue and red depending on the actual background. FSCK! FSCK! FSCK! FSCK! :mad:

How were you shooting these? Long exposures or short?
 
They weren't that long, between 2 and 5 seconds. I also did the old take a picture with the lens cap on and according to my camera the back of the lens cap looks like a fairly well lit Christmas tree. :(

That's what worries me. I'll do some tests, complete white/grey/blue/red/black shots, today and see what comes out. This is really a PITA! I didn't want to replace this body for at least another 6 months. :(

I didn't want to replace my 40D after using it for just one year (or my 24-105L, for that matter). But since someone "relieved" me of my heavy backpack, I had not choice :o

But yours was insured right? I'm not sure my insurance will cover a failing sensor.

Nope. I was shopping for insurance at the time, because I was pretty nervous about the travelling I was doing. Ironically, it got stolen while I wasn't travelling. You live and learn - my stuff is insured now :)
 
Does the 20D have the ability to delete dust data? You could have it map out the dead pixels that way.

No not that I'm aware of. For the time being it will do. At least I know exactly where the pictures need fixing. Good old PS cloning brush. :)

It's ok, now, a year later. Most of my stuff has been replaced, mostly with newer versions (MacBook to MacBook Pro, 40D to 50D, RS-80N3 remote to TC-80N3 remote). The only two items I have yet to replace is my 35mm f/2 and the 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM.

The biggest hassle was replacing my passport. If you think S.A. Home Affairs is a sorry business, try replacing your passport from abroad. Amongst other things, they insisted that they need my UK visa. Which was a sticker in my passport. Which was stolen. Which is why I was trying to replace it. :mad: Took nine months, all in all.

Yeah dealing with the SA "authorities" is a PITA at the best of times. I can only imagine the cr@p you had to go through not to mention during that time you can't do any traveling. Bummer.

I've just had another look through your Flickr shots and I really don't think I can really justify a 7d let alone a 5dmkII. I will probably replace my 20d with a 50d. I think I'll keep the 20d so at least I'll have two bodies always ready to shoot, with different lenses on. One of the local suppliers has the 50d with 17-55 f/2.8 USM for about 1275GBP which is less than half than just the 5d body and only a little more than the 7d body.

Aaargh! I must stop looking now. I just want to go out and buy. :o
