I shoot everything in Raw & JPG just cause it's easier to go through the JPEGs quickly and then process from the RAWs when I have the right file. Now what is happening is the RAW picture is nice and clean but the matching JPEG has a couple red pixles in the same spots on every shot. It's not a big deal because when I process a RAW file it's not there. It's like the cameras JPEG conversion is putting in spots and always the same place. And always red.

Should I be worried about my camera? It's got chicken pox. :wtf:

100% crop of (more or less) the same part of the shot.

It's a hot pixel. The software that you use to open RAW files probably removes them automatically

You are right. Photoshop takes it out of the RAW file and ACDSee leaves it in. Bugger!!! Anything I can do about it? Time for a service?

Two questions: Does it show up on all pictures or only long exposures? If only long exposures, does the 20D have long exposure noise reductions (i.e. dark frame subtraction)?

The OP mentioned it being every shot. I think its just a hot pixel.

Yup, every shot. Don't matter what settings or timings, creative or idiot mode. :(
Maybe try to upgrade the firmware on your camera? Could be a software related issue.
Already on the latest firmware, dated about 4 years ago. Canon beleives if it aint broke don't fix it. Or, they have just been to busy braking their new models. :p

Can a hot pixel be fixed? Is it worth fixing? Luckily it's not right in the midle of the frame. I could live with it but I would rather not.

Stop shooting JPG - problem solved - sanity restored. :)

NB - I read a quote somewhere - if you're not shooting RAW you're either arrogant or ignorant. - I'm thinking of making bumper stickers. :D

ROFL. I would buy one of those stickers, just not sure many people would understand it.

It's actually in my RAW files too except when I open them in PS they are removed. If I open the RAW file in ACDSee the red dot is there. It's not a huge issue I'm just a bit worried it gets worse. It never used to be there if I look at my older shots. :(

Sorry, my mistake. That's what happens when I read forums in the early morning hours. Dark frame subtraction won't work for this anyway, I think.

MadMailMan, the only way to fix it is to replace the sensor. It might be cheaper to get a second-hand 20D.

That makes me VERY :(

I had a quick look on ebay and I can pick up a 5d (not the mk II) for around 750USD. What do you think of the 5D? I like the idea of a 12mp full frame.

I'd buy one if it's from Canon's eBay store - they sell refurbished ones. Great camera - still has better IQ than any crop body.

Maybe get one of these? :D

Too small screen :p

Hmm, looking at the DxO stats, the D90 actually beats the 5D overall (by a slight margin). But the 5D is still far ahead of all the crops in the low light department.

It's interesting to see how much Nikon's cameras have improved. The D2X comes in under the Canon digital Rebels (xxxD series) and the D70 just barely beats the compacts of today. This is, of course, overall performance, which includes colour depth and dynamic range (both of which has improved a lot in modern sensors), and the D2X was a crop body, so it had no significant advantage over other crop bodies of its time as far as the sensor goes.

.
I don't know about far ahead. My 1dmk3 holds it own when it comes to low light and I'm pretty sure the mk4 will fare even better.

I wasn't really referring to 1.3x bodies. But even so, on the "Low light ISO" graph there's a 300 odd point differnece between the 5D and the 1DmkIII, and another 100 odd to the D90. That's a substantial difference in my books.

That said, the latest generation of FF bodies is even further ahead.

The two of you are not helping! :p

I like Canon more than Nikon in the same way I like Merc more than BMW. Both probably the best in their feild but I just like one more than the other. Canon it is for me. Adorama has some pretty good prices on used bodies. Some 40D(s) for around $600 and even a 50D for $880 which isn't so bad. I 'm just not one of those people who beleives you get better pictures by just throwing more pixels at it. If you know what I mean. I really like the idea of a full fram body tho. Hmmm, ponderous.
