Johannesburg - A young man from Roodepoort charged at one of his father's attackers on Tuesday night and stabbed him twice in the head with a steak knife, so hard that the blade broke off and stayed behind in the attacker's head.

Ruan Vorster, 19, says his dad, 49-year-old Phillip, a mechanical engineer and a member of the Roodekrans Neighbourhood Watch, had just opened the gate of their house in Palala Street for someone he knew and with whom he had an appointment.

While Vorster snr was waiting in the house for the man to arrive, he went outside at around 20:00 to fetch something from his Mercedes-Benz in the driveway.

He was attacked in the hallway by three armed men when he went back into the house, Ruan said.

Ruan and his 17-year-old brother, Hein, had both been on the phone in their respective bedrooms when they heard a noise in the hallway.

“When I looked out of my room I saw the men hitting my father over the head with torches and firearms.

"That's when I remembered about the steak knife next to my laptop.”

He grabbed the knife and charged at one of the robbers, who was fighting with his dad in the master bedroom at this stage, hit the attacker from the side with his elbow and pushed him up against the wall.

“I stabbed the knife into the top of his head twice with everything I had in me! But the knife's handle broke off,” he said.

The robber fell to the floor, bleeding, with the knife blade still in his head, while the other two robbers and Vorster snr where still wrestling.

Help

Hein ran to the telephone where his friend, Joubert Schoeman, 17, with whom he'd been talking before the attack, was still holding on. “Oh hell (…) just help!” Hein screamed.

Ruan went looking for more knives in his bedroom when he heard the shot.

The bullet scraped Vorster snr's stomach and exited through his right thigh.

Meanwhile, Joubert and his father Dirk, raced to the Vorster house after they had called the police.

“When I heard that shot, I was convinced my dad was dead,” said Ruan.

“The police were there within minutes, but by then the three robbers had already jumped into a white BMW and got away,” he said.

Vorster snr says Ruan is his hero. “He saved my life and his brother's.”

Jeez... Stabbing the dude in the head! Gives me the willies :sick:

Glad that they're all alright and a damn shame the robbers got away.
 
Well done, but sad it has come to this. We will have to get our hands and minds dirty, but we will survive.
 
That anyone...kid.... have to live in a country that this kind of thing is as Commons as bread and better. The trauma that was endured?. Crime is in full swing again.

Probably not the best time for measured consideration, but the head is not the ideal spot for a relatively wimpy steak knife. It is protected by the skull (a bony structure that can turn away steak knives – now an axe...). Go for a soft spot that the knife will penetrate easily.
 
Yeah yeah he'll stop to think next time. On the other hand robbers deserve implanted steak knives irrespective of location.
 
I'm never without a knife... proof again that a knife is way faster than a gun. The guy was stabbed twice before anyone could get off a shot!

Too small for a first attack maybe on the second or third stab. I prefer a quick straight jab to the chest through the ribs, breathing will be a problem after that.

Or side of the neck... cut that artery and let the dog bleed out...

Very brave indeed - glad the innocents is ok.

Unless you hit the vital spot (solar plexus if you're going for middle section) a jab to the chest is not going to do much... rather go for the nose - will up the heart rate and cause eyes to water...
 
Glad the family is safe and the dad survived being shot. Terrible for a family to have to endure that.

Now the cops need to watch the hospitals for someone wanting a knife blade removed from their head!

My mom told me a story of how back in the apartheid days, as part of radiologist training they were sent to work in the black hospitals because the experience was better. So this guy walks in literally with an axe in his head, holding it up so it doesnt fall out, and he says to her, "Naand missus". She fainted.

You're suggesting i stab someone in the nose! Whahaha :wtf:
