Hi Guys,
I see both companies make similar products at similar pricing.
Haven't had experience with either of the apps.

Which brand would you guys recommend and why?

I actually have a mix of all the above, Garage door and Gate switches are Sonoff along with many bulbs and door contacts; Light switches are Eachen (because i have no neutral in the electrical wiring - Sonoff would've been first choice but alas. My aircons and Pool pump switch are Tuya-based - i guess its about finding the device that meets your requirements

Using something like HomeAssistant or Google Home / Alexa brings everything into one portal so you can control everything centrally - then the underlying provider is less of an issue.

I'm sure others will have a different view

This sums it up pretty well. I only have Sonoffs (+/- 25) and I'm reasonably happy with Ewelink but I'll be moving to HA soon.

Sonoff'(Ewelink) / ESP based hardware a bit easier to integrate as it's supported more widely
Tuya's a bit of a pain depending on the version of the hardware and its available integrations, especially to convert and seperate the devices to run "Local" only rather than Cloud-based

If you are only doing an App on your phone,it's much over muchness to use Ewelink or Smart Life apps and their supported hardware

Could anyone provide a bit more clarity regarding whether SONOFF items have all the approval ratings to ensure you won't run into kak with insurers should something happen on the electrical side?

I read somewhere on MyBB that Shelly has all the relevant approvals (ICASA/SABS etc) so just want to double check Sonoff?

if you buy from one the the reputable suppliers they should all be certified , the Stock I sell as well as Eifferer(smartkit) and a few other guys should all be certified through the correct channels .

I ran Sonoff at home for a few years and there really is nothing wrong with the Sonoff - but I got Shelly and I do actually prefer it.

I've got a few and they really are cool. I don't use HA and much prefer stock Shelly app vs stock Sonoff app, with the custom photos etc
I prefer the rules / features / settings on Shelly too - and the hardware seems better made. Plus, the Shelly 1 can have three temperature probes, support up to 16A and does both AC/DC

Offering both AC & DC is a good feature.

I mix and went with Home Assistant...

I mostly use Sonoff & Shelly with some Connex mixed in for measure (IE use best product for a job and not brand limited)

All controlled via Home Assistant + Google Home so don't really care about their apps. In a similar fashion some of my automation done via Home Assistant and others via Google. Example: Arming the alarm can be done via Google voice trigger (Saying "Hi google I'm leaving") or when Home assistant picks up that my phone is outside if trigger radius.

So all in all I pick products/services to make life easier, else you end up with electronic "paper weights".

When you're starting out though you don't know about apps such as HA. So you tend to stick to one brand to eliminate app clutter. Nothing worse than trying to remember which app switches on which smart bulb. Five years ago Sonoffs were scarce here and expensive. Now you walk into Liteglo and they're on display.

Adding them to Google Assistant helps when you start well that is what I did, bar the sensors for some reason almost none of em work with Google? The sensors is the reason I added Home assistant later on to go the next step.

Not sure if things have changed but Google Assistant was messy to say the least. You couldn't add or change schedules so it was either turn off or turn on the lights. And not all the Sonoff devices were picked up GA. I went back to Ewelink (which everyone hates but it works, seems to be a sheeple thing though) and am now implementing HA. Need to get an irrigation system integrated as well as my Blue Iris system.

Don't buy Sonoff DW2 Wifi's - it's their one product I regret buying - the rest are pretty solid.

Whats the issue with them?
I just bought one as a test, seems kinda ok for now

Worked 1 day - then not the next day.
Now I am unable to get them on WIFI at all.
Looks like they are channel and RF dependent.

Does anyone run HA on one of the original PI 1's? Have one doing nothing but not sure if its a waste of time to set it up on there.

Sorry for the hijack.

My test unit had a firmware update and was pretty reliable. Pairing still needed a SSID without certain characters but could take complex enough passwords.
Been solid until today when I killed to power to do some work, once it came back on the device wouldnt connect to the wireless again.
Probably going to have to reset it and test again, but for a security device it might not be good enough
