Hi

Anyone here who has this player? :)

If so, what are your thoughts on it?

Basically, I want to be able to watch series and movies off an external hard drive (mkv, avi, mpg, mpeg, mp4) without any hassles or sound being muted or copyright messages showing up etc. Other than that, I'll assume that the main feature of the player (watching actual blu-rays) works perfectly fine? :)

Thanks in advance guys

The only problem with Sony bluray plays is the cinevia protection on the audio tracks.
Much better to get media player.

ALL Blu-Ray players have to have it now, it's part of the Blu-Ray spec.

OP, it should be fine, just make sure you get proper files without the Cinavia cack (such as 99.9999999% of content is anyway)

One of the reasons I`m getting a blu ray player is because I want to start a collection. Getting a media player won't help me there :)

I didn't update my BR player yet :) no stopping me from pirated stuff ;-) got a sammie... It's says update available, since all my samir stuff is connected through dongles, but refuse to do it.. Wonder if they can push a firmware upgrade without me knowing....

i'm considering getting this unit. is a 2TB ext HDD compatible?

Ask all those people with DVD collections if thats a good idea

Got a good deal at dion yesterday. Will update by the weekend

One of the few really "free" blu-ray players is an Oppo. The BDP-115 is expensive at R 22000 but you can get BDP-83s, BDP-93s for much much less. Infinitely configurable.

Have a look at AVSA classifieds and the dealer link

The only thing I found is that not all video formats are supported on the USB input, but this can be fixed with FreeView

TWENTY TWO THOUSAND Rand? Are you freaking kidding me? That's 11 times the price of a normal player. It better do a bit more than be "configurable"

I've got the S380. The usb slot doesn't read anything more than 2 folders deep and gui gets slow when indexing files. You can get yourself a microserver which is more flexible in the long run or an old laptop with XBMC.

In the A/V fraternity Oppo is considered to be a high end brand. They produce universal players, with pretty good digital-to-analogue converters for audiophile audio. The disc transport system is also not the run of the mill design.

I should think that only the trained eye and ear would notice the differences to a mainstream brands like Samsung and Sony. Also I assume the fine tuning on those units are for the audiophile and super rich.

I'm well aware of that. But I'm also well aware that AV types can spend insane amounts of money on stuff that isn't worth it. For that money, you can get a very good PC with a very high-end soundcard or standalone DAC if you want. There's no way in hell any player is more capable than that.

I am not that crazy to spend over R20 grand for a dvd player as long as it does it's job. If I was a multi-millionaire then I would spend that cash as taken it with me to my grave isn't viable

Tested the unit today. The osd is sufficient. Reads the 2TB ext hdd with ease. plays mkv mp4 avi.
