Sony Ericsson K810i - First Impressions

Quick update: In terms of battery life I am pleasantly surprised. Spent a whole day browsing the internet off my phone and doing other stuff and at the end of the day the battery was at about 20%. And I had used the phone A LOT.

Lol okay.

hj2k_x, where did you upgrade your contract? Game? You said it came with a R400 voucher, and this was for the old Vodacom deals right?

FFS the closest one to me (Wynberg) doesn't have the K810i, must schlep to Anal Walk :p

I upgraded up Vodashop in Canal Walk- got great service from the guys there. They really knew their stuff and gave me unbiased information.

I saw the K810i in the Game leaflet with a R300 voucher, still under the old deals. That was the same day as I got my upgrade. Chose not to go to Game because of the great service from Vodashop. R500 might have swayed me though.

Don;t know about the new deals. There is still nothing on the Game site. Maybe double check before you go down there.

Cool cool. Yeah I'll definitely check before. Hoping the voucher has increased :D

Yeah, I hope so too :)

Also, have you played with the phone yet? Might want to try to get an actual one to play with. These buttons and joystick are not going to be for everyone, specially if you have big fingers. They do look nice, but they do take some getting used to. Specially coming from a K750i.

My Father has one. He also had a K750i. Like Father, like Son ;)

Really? have you played with one? What's it like? I don't like that it is all touch screen. I want some buttons for fast smsing!

Nope, but spent about 200MB of bandwidth on watching vids on YouTube ;)

You can set it so that it displays normal ABC, DEF, GHI etc. "keys", or set it to display a full qwerty keyboard. Jeez I wonder if MXit would even run on the Viewty as most of the screen is taken up by keys when you're using it (the "keypad/board").

Ya, that is my worry. That it will be a nightmare for fast typing. That is why that new SE X1 looks so promising with its 3" screen and full slide out keyboard :)

Sjoe, one wonders how much that would cost though. And when it'll be released here.

Nah I think typing would be the same speed on the Viewty, especially one you've mastered the qwerty keyboard. One review said it's faster than normal phones with normal buttons.

At least the Viewty supports Windows Live Messenger ;)

Ya, it certainly does look nice. Huge screen, and the phone itself is not too bulky. If only you could actually get your hands on one here in SA!

Main disadvantages

* No hot-swap memory card capability
* Having stylus as a dongle is an inconvenient solution
* File management slows once the memory card starts filling up
* Operating the zooming jog wheel gets in the way of the lens

Just read gmsarena's review of it. There are a few issues there that seem not so great- like the fact that the stylus doesn't actually clip into the phone but attaches to the handstrap. That would almost ruin it for me- i don't want a handstrap hanging from my phone at all!

I saw a vid of the qwerty keyboard in action- That was slooow. If you don't want to use that for typing an sms, can you use the normal keys with a t9 dictionary?
