Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc

another mediocre review.... so not getting this phone anymore

:(

Dude go get your iPhone already you know you want one.

All the reviews I see on this device seem to blame SE implementation of android. Easily remedied by a quick root and flash. That in my view is actually one of the strengths about Android, we shop for what hardware we like, we not forced into a one design fits all box.

Personally I like the design I just love my mini tablet more.

Sony Xperia Arc (LT15i) - Impressions

Hi guys, Rands sourced me from XDA ... told me about this here thread.

Anyway I've got a Midnight Blue Sony Xperia Arc for 2 days now and here are my impressions:

Let me start by declaring I was an Xperia X10i owner, had it rooted ... installed JIT the works. Only thing I never did was install any of the custom firmware as I was waiting for something very stable. Anyway I got the Arc before I ever tried any of that. Ok, to the Arc! Was able to source it from Dubai, it is the LT15i which is the Global or World Model.

Obviously the first thing you notice is how gorgeous the device is, just how slick the design is & how gorgeously considered the ergonomics are. It feels brilliant & looks even better, every positive thing you've read/heard/seen about the phone is all true and actually doesn't do it justice. The 4.2" screen is mammoth, sharp & vivid, it feels smooth to touch which is a definite plus. Only design issues I have is the Micro-USB being 'naked' & the LED notification being on the side of the phone ... also getting used to the swapped out menu & back buttons. As you can see these design 'issues' are extremely minor.

Something else to note is the phone warms up slighlty just behind the camera just above the Xperia emblem. I'm yet to meet anyone who hasn't had the 'wow' factor when seeing this phone.

The phone is extremely smooth and responsive, I would say it is easily faster than the iPhone 4 however timescape continues to be a bit laggy but fortunately it is now just a widget os. Mediascape has also been made a widget & performs really well, infact the stock apps are very nice, slick, sleek, sexy & very responsive & quick. Basically the phone runs very quick however some web pages were slightly laggy. The camera is brilliant - pictures & videos are excellent in quality & the phone transitions between the camera & homescreen in lagless fashion, very quick. Xperia X10i users will testify just how low the sound was during calls & this is improved in the Arc however I still think it could be a bit louder but it is much improved, the sound quality itself is good & noise cancellation actually does it's job. The battery as you know is only optimized after a week or so but it already is outperforming my X10i after two full charges so it all bodes well for the future.

Won't go into detail on HDMI connectivity, Gingerbread, apps and the like as it all works as you would expect. I really would like to give a dual core smartphone a look through because comparatively this is the fastest phone I've used & this above all else makes it a joy to use. Sony Ericsson's mix of style & substance is spot on with this phone & I'd love to see how they top. I'm not sure if it is Gingerbread or the SE user interface/stock launcher or even the bravia engine but the transistions and animations add a very slick & polished experience. I think the word slick (and Fast) pretty much sums up this phone, it really exudes style, desgin, speed and slickness. Gotta love it!

Also for the more advanced users, there are currently two ways to root the phone. One being through a process that involves unlocking the bootloader (which void warranty according to SE official website) before actually achieving superuser status & another which is Gingerbreak which achieves root without bootloader dealings. I rooted the phone last night via Gingerbreak (takes about a minute) & will probably unlock the bootloader when some classy ROMS hit the scene.

Anyway these are my impressions after 2 days or so ... very pleased & very impressed. Maybe I'll post some screens when I've got time.
