Just curious on the thoughts of Sony TVs?

I've always disregarded Sony in favour of Samsung, but decided to take a look at their offering. The Sony 50" R550 is R15,000.00 and according to reviews outperforms the Samsung 7 series and offers great value.

Anything bad with them?

Still one of the top brands and there isn't all that much between them really. If reviews say it's the better of the two models then go for it, I would imagine its a small paper value difference anyway.

As long as you aren't buying Hi Sense or Sinotec you are good to go.

This. I'd get the Sony as well.

Can't comment on that specific model, but I have a smaller older model 32", while my friend has a newer 40". No issues with either so far, works great out the box etc. Biggest thing is setting up the screen to suit your tastes as I'm sure any tv requires.

Great - now to find R15k!

Thanks

What's the point shelling out 15K for a fancy "Smart TV" if you don't have the Samsung App store?
I might be talking out of my ass here but doesn't Samsung kinda blow LG/Sony/etc out of the water in that department?

And if you're not worried about Apps anyway, and Size is what you're after...well, iirc you can get a 60 Inch Samsung for R15K... so why would you want to settle for 50 inch at the same price?
And then of course, you get that Samsung App store on top of the 60" size.

Just my 2c.

The 'Smart' and 3D come with the set - I'm not interested in either. I don't get about voice control, webcams, motion sensors or other gimmicks either.

But it's not only features that determines what features a set has. All features aside, a Series 5 and Series 7 TV differ in image quality as well - so although I can get a 60" Samsung with lower IQ, I'd rather go for smaller screen real estate and higher quality.

Quality > Quantity in my eyes

Quality > Quantity in my eyes

As much as I agree with that, does it have 10" bigger worth of quality?
This is R15K you're spending here, don't just brush this off lightly with that "I prefer quality!" bullshlt. Think about this properly.

It's not my money nor my TV set... but a day after you've installed the TV you're gonna get that "Man... I should have gone bigger!" thought.

We all want quality, but be sure it's REALLY a lot "better quality" because 50 inch vs. 60 inch is a lot bigger than you think man.

Here is the difference in fact.

You haven't even asked if he has space for a 60".

I think a 50" is perfect for even a large room. Hell a 42" is even fine for a large room.

Which 60" are you talking about ... ?

I see a plasma 60" which - as you've seen - I'm not a fan of ... is there another?

I dunno where I saw it but it was a Sammy 60" for 15K - can't remember if it was LED or Plasma.
Check Guzzle I guess?

If picture Quality is what you're after though Plasma is definitely better for many reasons - but i'm not feeling lus to have that debate now :D

hehe ... ok - no debate, but plasma is out ;)

The 60" is probably the plasma, as I saw that at Cats Digital http://www.catsdigital.co.za/tv-s-televisions/samsung/55-64/samsung-60f5500-3d-smart-plasma-tv.html

The F5500 happens to be the dimmest they've tested here http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-tvs/samsung-pn51f5500/4505-6482_7-35757117.html

Where the Samsung F5500 disappoints is in bright room playback. I don't know of anyone who dutifully turns off all the lights and closes the curtains every time they watch TV, and the Samsung is worse than any TV we've recently tested with the lights on -- and that includes the also-heliophobic S60.

It's funny how different people's choices can be eh? :p
I wouldn't take a Sony If I can get a Samsung...I wouldn't get a 50" If i could get a 60", and I wouldn't get an LED if I could get a Plasma.....

But yeah, I guess if you want Sony + LED and are happy with 50" there is nothing I can add here, heh.
Good Luck with the TV man, enjoy!

PS: And don't knock 3D until you've had it at home with a lekka blockbuster - the people who say "3D is a gimmick!" just don't own 3D sets.
2D>3D conversion works a LOT better than you would expect too! I can't iterate this enough.

True - but check out this conclusion on the Sony http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-tvs/sony-kdl-50r550a/4505-6482_7-35561978.html

While the R520/R550 may be in Sony's mid-range, it manages to outperform more-expensive TVs such as Samsung's UNF7100.

I know the Series 7 is a fantastic TV, but check out the scores here http://www.rtings.com/reviews/tv/lcd-led/samsung/f7100 and check the score of the Series 5 plasma display http://www.rtings.com/reviews/tv/plasma/samsung/f5500

It really is chalk and cheese between the two when it comes to IQ and I do feel the difference in quality is large enough to justify the extra 10".

PS Didn't knock 3D - but not a biggy for me

And while I'm on it - check the levels on that page regarding blacks and white.

Far, far different to what people have mentioned. If I was a first timer to these forums, I'd think the plasma seriously slaughters the LED/LCD in the black level department. Fact is the difference of even these two panels is so slight

PLASMA
Black luminance : 0.039 cd/m2
White luminance : 93.3 cd/m2
Black luminance at max white : 0.039 cd/m2
Max white luminance : 93.3 cd/m2

LED
Black luminance : 0.022 cd/m2
White luminance : 97.9 cd/m2
Black luminance at max white : 0.051 cd/m2
Max white luminance : 241 cd/m

I did read the numbers before I posted, PP ... I do understand the massive 0.012 difference between the two. It's almost exactly the way you have described in your posts
