Which would you choose and why?

Sony KLV-40V550 TV & BDP-S360 BluRay player

or

Samsung LA40B550 TV & BDP1600 BluRay player

I'm going to pick one of the two options up on Saturday.

Thanks,

MB

Watch out for Samsung HDMI compatibility issues, but if it is a straight forward setup, without switching or splitting, don't worry about it.

So you'll write off Samsung panels because the optical drives had issues?....

Sony and Samsung tv's have their pro's and cons... you need to look at each to see which one you prefer...

I would go with Samsung purely because of my current existing setup - Samsung LCD + Samsung DVD Recorder + Samsung BD Player (soon) = compatibility :)

I've never had issues with their HT optical units and the LCD is great with HD content. Currently streaming HD via my PC to the LCD at 1080p.

I got the Sammy LA40B550 and BDP1600 deal from Makro a few weeks back. I was also torn between the Sammy and Sony displays and my decision came down to looks, that's how close these panels are in performance. The Sony is a *little* better at upscaling SD images, but the Sammy just beats it in looks. I couldn't see a difference in HD signals between the two, although I did not spend hours doing comparisons.

I'm running these through my Yamaha RXV861 amp in HDMI and I've honestly had no compatibility or switching issues.

Check on the USB capabilities as well. Some may offer only USB picture and not USB Movie. Also check if they are 50Hz or 100Hz. If possible go for 100Hz as picture quality is better. IMO the Samsung's look way nicer than the Sony.

If brand name is important to you, get the Sony, if a little bit of a brand name is important with slightly better value get the Samsung. Or if brand name is not important at all, get a Sinotech for best value :)

With LCD's/Plasma's, I've noticed that people tend to think that the lesser known brands are pure crap. So if you care about what other people think, get a Sony.

I'm contemplating getting myself a second Sinotech, the 47" Full HD beast... I find 42" is a BIT small for my lounge.

For the price of the 123" I would rather build a cinema room with a good projector... don't you think?
