Sony 'pleaded' with third-party PS3 developers

Last week ended with game-industry analysts bemoaning "dismal" sales of the PlayStation 3 this past September. However, all the number-crunching obscured a nugget of potentially more troubling news for the future of Sony's console.

In his latest column, San Jose Mercury News columnist and noted author Dean Takahashi claims that this year, "Sony [has] pleaded with third-party developers not to abandon its struggling platform. That change in attitude is a marked difference compared to the arrogance of past years."

Takahashi concurs with the widespread opinion that the PS3 is being sliced with a double-edged sword: Development for its games is labor-intensive, while its installed base lags behind that of the Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360. As of the end of September, only about 1.9 million units of the PS3 had sold in the US since the system launched in November 2006, according to research firm the NPD Group.

By contrast, just over 4.5 million units of the Wii, which also launched last November, have been sold. The Xbox 360 has moved about 6.8 million units domestically since its November 2005 launch despite a highly public--and expensive--hardware failure problem.

"The argument is that the PS3 will show its strength as developers learn how to make games for it," surmised Takahashi. "But developers know they can staff four or five Wii teams with the same number of people it takes to make one PS3 game. We may have a glut of Wii games soon, but that's not as bad as not having enough games on the PS3."

i was watching the Killzone 2 vids last night, the lastest one with the game play trailer, The PS3 is very capable of pushing some real good graphics out but as what alot of developers are doing is that they heading where the market is at this point.. The 360.

alot of people told me that the killzone 2 trailer was pre-rendered, but omg the gameplay trailer is exactly the same as the opening cinematics, If by chance sony and the killzone developers have gone all out there way just to juice the new trailers then ill never ever play another FPS again! cos that would be just wrong!!!

Since the latest price cuts and the release of the new 40gig model the PS3 has outsold the xbox in Europe! Further more a actual comparrison at a similar points in their life spans (After aligning launch dates) see's the PS3 slightly above the xbox!! http://www.lazygamer.co.za/xbox-360/ps3-doing-just-fine/ So to say that the PS3 is a failing console is more than a little harsh. Due to the fact that the PS3 is always comparred to the xbox it seems like the ps3 is battling but this is only cos we look at them as simultaneously released systems as opposed to the xbox having a one year lead.

However having said that, I regard this as a awesome move from Sony and I can see the console moving from strength to strength. I have said it before and I will say it again Who has the most exclusives left this year?

I'm guessing that it's PS3, if you're the one posting. But I'd actually be surprised by that, is this true?

The Xbox has only two exclusives left, Ace Combat and Mass Efect (I think).
The PS3 has 5 or 6 on the way still.

As I said before, that's the daftest comparison. Firstly, because you're wrong, and secondly because (shock and horror!) the 360 has actually released some of it's exclusives already! If you count "late 07" exclusives, 360 versus PS3, it's a very sad story for the PS3.

Anyway, on the numbers, you still wrong. - Ace Combat, Mass Effect, Naruto, Scene IT, VP:PA, there's still plenty exclusives to come, let alone the awesome Arcade titles on the way.

And XBLVM gets Looney Tunes! :D

well im getting a PS3 for x-mas, the only thing stopping me is the media and all the bad news for sony, I do not want to invest into a machine that will and wont have any developers making games for it.

Ill wait and see, ill wait till december to see the status on the PS3 and if it still looks bleek then im heading for 360 AGAIN!!! which looks more and more a reality for me.

I think it is absolutely stupid to think that that developers would ever stop making games for the ps3. Firstly the ps3 I growing rapidly of late after recent price cuts (Beating the xbox). Secondly devs wouldnt just forget a large chunk of income, the ps3 has already established a large user base, sure it may not be as large as the current xbox base but its large enough that devs would never want to miss the income. Thirdly some devs have started coming out saying that the ps3 is the better console (Latest being activision).

PS doobiwan keep whining bro, someone might listen eventually ;)

Lol, I go out of my way to be nice to the PS3 but you're still a troll.

It's not economically viable to develop for the PS3, short of ****y ports. There are not enough people buying PS3 versions to warrant investment even in ports. Hence the article that spawned this post. That's not a troll post, that's informed industry opinion.

Sacred, Supreme Commander, Project Offset, Warhammer, Marve online, the list of 360/PC games continues to grow.

@Abe, will you ever come up with an original jab? The only retorts you've ever come up with are rehashes of the stuff I've thrown at you. Sort of like a Killzone versus Halo, always the pretender . . .

Sales always spike after a price drop, and remember Europe never got the first $100 cut, so there's pent up demand. It'll subside.

Don't worry. It will get games made for it.

Nothing will change by December. Start looking out for the PS3s comeback fight mid to late next year.

Now now be nice, Gouged is right. He didn't say it was going to take over the world, but by the middle of next year it'll be in a much stronger position to compete, which is a good thing even for 360 owners, it keeps Microsoft on their toes.

Who has the most exclusives left this year?

the question you have to ask yourself is this.

has ps3 actually got a single decent game, like something out there (Halo, BioShock, GoW)?

the other day i was out window shopping some console games for other far superior console when i noticed the dark barren corner dedicated to a crashed ps3. fortunately i could reset the thing and after some time they had motorsport or woteva it is called.

i enjoyed the game. graphics were cool but my word does the controller suck. did they make that controller for midgets or something?

anyway needless to say did i salivate at the mouth or kick myself for owning an xbox360.

most certainly not - as i recall i went home and played Dirt which in my oppinion completely white washes the moto game i was playing on ps3.

the fact that sony are pleading for 3rd party developers to try is a sign of desperation.

i think what we are seeing is possibly sony losing the lead in the next gen console war.

lets hope they get it right with ps4 - if they get that far.
