Sony has a new market strategy and a new naming scheme. So, no Xs and no As, the new premium mid-rangers are called “Xperia 10” and there are two of them, both with 21:9 screens like the Xperia 1 flagship (note that these are not CinemaWide screens).
Bringing up the rear is the Xperia L3 with an old school name and an old school spec sheet.

The two Xperia 10 phones and the L3 will be available later today.

Sony Xperia 10 Plus
The Sony Xperia 10 Plus is like an affordable version of the new Sony flagship. Its 6.5” 21:9 screen is just as large as the Xperia 1 screen, though it’s an IPS LCD with 1080p+ resolution (1,080 x 2,520px). The 3,000mAh battery is nearly as big too.

The 10 Plus features a dual camera on the back with a 12MP main module (1/2.8” sensor) and an 8MP telephoto camera (2x zoom, only does photos). The phone can record 4K videos (in 16:9 and 21:9 formats) and features SteadyShot (electronic stabilization). The 8MP selfie camera is identical to the one on the Xperia 1.

The Snapdragon 636 chipset offers a performance upgrade over the old XA2 phones as it features four Cortex-A73 based cores in addition to the A53 cores. The phone has 4GB of RAM and 64GB storage, plus a microSD slot for up to 512GB more.

Sony Xperia 10
The Sony Xperia 10 is more compact with a 6.0” screen – still with a 21:9 aspect ratio and the same 1080p+ resolution. This means the phone is only 68mm wide.

Its 13+5MP dual camera loses the telephoto module, the second unit is just a depth sensor. On the plus side, the camera can still do 4K video recording and features SteadyShot. The 8MP selfie camera makes another appearance.

The chipset goes back to the old Snapdragon 630, which gets 3GB of RAM and 64GB storage (expandable). The battery capacity is pretty close at 2,870mAh. Neither phone supports fast charging.

We’ve some good news for Sony fans. For a while many believed that the company was set to pull out of South Africa, citing stagnating sales. But that’s not entirely true.

While the Xperia 1 was announced on Monday at MWC 2019, today Sony Mobile announced that its flagship Xperia 1 will arrive in South Africa in July 2019.

Clearly, Sony Mobile isn’t leaving the African market, at least not as a smartphone seller, just yet.

As for the Xperia 1’s specifications, enjoy our lengthy report of its internals and that 6.5 inch 4K OLED screen.

While we have a launch date, the Japanese firm failed to disclose a price. However, it seems the three mid-range devices — Xperia 10, 10 Plus and L3 — which also debuted at MWC 2019 are heading to our shores.
The recommended retail prices for these are as follows:
  • Xperia 10 Plus – R8999
  • Xperia 10 – R6499
  • Xperia L3 – R4499
These devices will be available on Vodacom first from 20 March, and will arrive on other networks on 1 April. Pre-orders for Vodacom user will open next week.

The South African market can do with more competition at the flagship smartphone level, especially with 2019 shaping up to be one of the most exciting for consumers in recent memory.
