Sony xperia V or Z?

I can upgrade with mtn, and actually waited for a xperia t, which they say they wont get anymore. So in this month I see they have the xperia v for R319 , and z for 399, both on mtn200, including 150 meg data, which I will not really use much of. I'm on a mtn200 now, and i find it suites me fine.

Now I compared the 2 phones on gsmarena, and I can find one big difference, other than better battery life on the z, and a few minor points. I like the V more because it is smaller, but thats not the biggest issue.

What would you do, go for the Z, for so much more, or settle for the V?

well I currently have an Xperia T(the T and V are basically the same phone) and can tell you that it doesn't lack anything performance wise.

I say base your decision on form factor. The Z is a 5" phone, while the V is a 4.3" phone. So do you want something small and sleek or don't you mind something larger?
 
I would say the smaller one is for me. My biggest requirement in a phone is a good camera. With small kids you never know when they do something funny, and a camera is a appliance that is always in the drawer with flat batteries.

Then the V well suit you well.
 
I am also deciding between these 2 phones but leaning more towards the V because of the size.

any idea what the docking charger would cost for this phone ?
 
everyone is saying V for size, but I think its a moot point.

years ago when the Note came out everyone thought people were cooking mad when walking around with one coz it was "too big". Untill they picked it up, and used it for a bit... then picked up whatever phone they had, and were like wtf wow this small screen is actually kaka!

fast forward and all the flagships are bringing out these 5" monters because they are actually much better to use, and for a couple of bucks extra a month, its defiitely worth it... especially when showing the wife pics you took of the kids! ;)

Very true.

I remember when a 4.3" phone like the Desire HD was "huge" when it came out.
 
I had to update my son’s R100 top-up contract, the Xperia Z were only available on a 200 top-up at R359 which I think compares well with the Samsung S4 contracts who are all over R400, but I were not prepared to go past R300. I could have gotten the Xperia J at R200 but since I were upgrading from the Motorola MB525: a 800MHz single core phone that have become very sluggish and problematic over the years so I decided that I want at least a duel core. The V have so surprised with its speed that I think the J may not be so bad if you are not into playing games. Of the three Sony phones the J has the best battery life : 600 hours on standby the Z gets 450hours and the V gets 400 but then the V has a 1750 maH battery and only weighs 120 grams. There were lots of complaints about bugs in the V like the SOD(sleep of death) but I received mine with Android 4.1.2 and the first thing I did after I switched it on was upgrade to build 9.1.A.1.140 and have to date experienced no bugs. The V gives a few Quad cores a run for their money but the Z is a bit slower than the Samsung octal-core S4 but then the S4 is not water proof.
I received my Xperia V with a drop-in charging bay which means you just drop it in and don’t have to connect the charger to a mini USB plug. I like this because it would save the mini USB plug, and my patience, especially when I have just come from a party and have to charge before I go to work.
Sony has a app called Smart connect that allows you to do certain things under certain conditions. I have set mine up to automatically start the blue tooth, connect to my Philips speaker system and start the Walkman app when I drop it in the charging bay: very cool!
Naturally my son would now get my old phone and I would be using the V.

I nearly forgot, the camera on this baby is excellent ! I normally don’t trust cameras with automatic scene recognition but this one seems to work. I took this photo under very adverse lighting conditions, short distance on full automatic with automatic flash and HDR on. DSC_0004.jpg

Eish guys, struggling to decide between the V and another phone (am I allowed to say what it is if not a z?).
I like the waterproofness, but am worried about the issues as well as the battery life - any thoughts on this?

What's the other option?

As you can see from the guy above you the V is an amazing phone.

There is no real issues with the xperia Z except for the average camera but the update I'm busy downloading now will apparently help resolve this to some extent. The screen is simply amazing (I prefer LCD over amoled) and battery life is pretty decent and I always make it through the day on one charge...sometimes when I'm not too busy on my phone I get a standby time of 2-4 days thanks to the stamina mode.

Only issue for me is the lack of accessories as I would have really liked a charging dock. My girlfriend got one with her Xperia V and it works awesome.

What other phone are you considering?
 
i just replaced my motorola mb525. looked at the Xperia's. they look nice. I went with the Samsung S3 mini due to it being cheaper on the anytime 200 package.

Only thing i do not like is it has no LED indicator. Otherwise not a bad phone.

Why do you feel it needs a cover?

My Z doesn't feel like it needs a cover at all.
 
lol the V (and the Z) is tougher and more durable than what the might look like. Just the other day my Z fell out the car on the tarmac when I was busy getting out of the car.....no scratch or anything!!

Besides the fact that these phones dont really need a cover or case....using one will ruin the beautiful aesthetics of the phone (especially on the Z)
 
Owners of the V, do you have the 3G or LTE (4G) model.
I was considering a S4 mini but something is pulling me go for Sony. So many of my friends have upgraded to the S4 mini and it's not like I'm trying to be different, I just want the better phone.

Will I be able to download BBM on The V?

I have the LTE model, haven't used it so far - there is no MTN LTE coverage in Stellenbosch.

As for the durability, I have dropped the phone when getting out of the car and it chipped one of the plastic edges, badly. I then got a cover for it, and now I am not not too worried about dropping it.

Check this pic out, I took it the day before on a sunset cruise off Praslin in the Seychelles. My FB friends could not believe this was taken from a phone!
