Hey dudes, need some help.

What's a good sub R1000 sound card that I can get. Was looking at one of the ASUS Xonars. I have a pair of Tritton AX720's so it has to be able to take a Toslink (SPDIF) cable at the back.

Also, can anyone explain the difference between a PCI express sound card and a normal one?

Thanks.

PCI x1 is the new slot aka shortie and is faster than the standard PCI slot that is the long normal one which is getting fazed out. In a nutshell they are both the same, but because PCI x1 is faster the sound card has a better connection to the motherboard which will then allow it to have more features and better quality.

Maybe this one? It uses the standard PCI slot.

Asus Xonar D1 , ultra fidelity 7.1 pci sound card

Here is a PCI x1 card:

Asus Xonar DX PCI Express 7.1 Audio Card [XONAR_DX/XD/A]

Both support/have SPDIF/Toslink. I don't know enough about audio specifications to tell you which one is better.

OP has a budget of R1000 and so far I can only find the Xonar Xense bundled with a headset for R2200+-

Oh PLEASE tell me you know where to get one? A place that actually has stock...

Thanks dude. Is the spdif connection on the back of the card tho? Or is it to route via vga internally? That's the only thing I'm worried about coz I don't want to buy the card online and find out it won't work.

Shot!

Assuming you mean optical S/PDIF, it's shared with the microphone in port, there's an adaptor you get with the card.

Coaxial S/PDIF is not supported.

Although, if you're using S/PDIF, why buy a soundcard in the first place??? It's the DAC's that make it great. If you just output digital signals, just use onboard.

Called and got no response, then sent an email yesterday morning. I'm still waiting for them to register my account as well, which I applied for on Monday. Strange as their service is normally so world class hehe...

They're exactly the same apart from the interface, one being PCI and the other PCIe. I'd definitely recommend the DX. Costs about R700

+1 asus xonar DX. if you can find stock :)

Cape Town is a tad far unfortunately. I'd love to hear from the Midrand branch, but it doesn't look like they'll give me info without having an account... I applied for one on Monday but they're not replying... Also PM'd their forum rep but got no answer.
