Make of it of you wish.

Honestly it was close, very close. The choice of music was poor. I can setup a test like that where you'll be able to tell the difference between 128k and 192k just by picking different music where compression artifacts and clipping will make themselves known.

Agreed, music seemed a bit basic, lacking of many layers.

And not every 128/192/256/320kbps is the same. I'm sure they used 'high quality' 128kbps in those clips.

It's like taking two naturally aspirated 2.0L four cylinder engines and saying they're the same or similar, an Audi/VW ±100kW and then a Honda S2000 ±180kW.

Well I am certainly impressed. :)
Okay, fair enough...

Personally while I have a lot of FLACs, I just don't see the need really... 320kbps mp3 is fine by me.

Storage is cheap, it's not THAT big of a deal :p

Yet my phone only has a 16GB external sd, not enough to put my entire music library (mp3's) on. If I would go flac I would never be able to fit a tenth of it on.
On a side note, anyone know of a class 10 32GB micro sd card?

Esquire sell them for about R40. I grabbed a whole lot a few weeks back. Very handy for storing OS installs etc..

Windows 10 Technical Preview = 3.92GB, doesn't fit, wanted to install for dual boot :( .
Ended up buying some DVDs. Came home and found out that the dvd drive is broken. Network install ftw.

I wouldn't use my phone for FLAC. MP3 is more than adequate.

Class 10 32GB SD cards are available literally everywhere.

Really? Went to musica and quite a few other stores, musica was the only one that I found to sell class 10. Was sadly only 16GB which is what I have now. The rest sold only class 4-6.

Pick 'n Pay, Incredible Connection, Hi Fi Corp, Game, Dion Wired, Vodacom, MTN?

Then there's online stores.

Your phone has a pretty rubbish audio processor and you're not likely to see the difference between a medium (maybe even low) quality MP3 and FLAC. That being said, a 32 GB SD card will hold a lot of music even in FLAC. FLAC is around 12 MB/minute, so you've still got about 44 hours of music. Pretty much all camera shops and computer shops will have 32 GB Class 10 SD cards, I got mine locally for around R280. Rebeltech has them for under R200 http://www.rebeltech.co.za/microsd-sd-sdhc/7539-transcend-premium-microsdhc-32gb-class-10-with-sd-adapter-transcend-premium-microsdhc-ts32gusdhc10-32gb-class-10-read-write-10-1.html and Kalahari for R233 http://www.kalahari.com/Camera-Photo-Video/Transcend-Premium-MicroSD-Flash-Memory-32GB_p_45789060. Even with postage they'll work out cheap.

Thanks, never thought to check Pick 'n Pay. Will never check Incredible due to hating their prices and not standing for such huge markups. Game = going to check that one as well. From the Telecoms providers, most of those are class 4/6, tried MTN/Vodacom/CellC and Telkom. At least here in Bayside when I asked.

You can discern the difference quite clearly.
EDIT: Thanks for the links though, going to order one now.

I beg to differ based mainly on the environment in which you would normally use a phone to listen to music - while shopping, on a bus/train, as a passenger in a car, etc. Times and places where there is background noise. I can tell the difference in quality between a crap rip and a decent rip using my phone in a silent environment with my headphones, but when out and about there's enough background noise (and I'm not walking around with decent headphones) for me to not notice or care.

I often listen in silent environments, I listen at least 20-30 minutes before going to bed when it is quiet and often to relax.
Also, my earphones are noise cancelling, they are pretty good at it, so don't have to crank it up high not to hear others, they were kinda expensive for me. Thanks for the links though.

In bed? That's what the PC and remote are for :D And it's a pleasure :)
