South Africa is a country situated on the southern tip of the African continent. Where internet penetration is concerned, South Africa typically does not have a developed internet infrastructure, when compared internationally. Efforts is however under way to increase the accessibility common South Africans have to the internet.
Bandwidth
South Africa's de facto telecommunications monopoly (although competition is expected to increase in the near future) provides its customers with of the world's most expensive bandwidth. Typically, a customer has to lease a line from the fixed line operator and long-time telecommunications monopoly Telkom, before any connection to the national telephone system is provided. For connectivity to the internet, a customer has to purchase an additional contract from a so-called Internet Service Provider (ISP), for an additional cost on top of the lease of the telephone line. Only then does the customer have access to the internet, and so in effect he or she pays twice for one service. In international markets, connectivity to the internet is generally provided as soon as a subscription to an ISP has been made, without having to pay a company or entity who owns the telephone line itself.
