South African Boxing Appreciation Thread

I also liked Bongani Mwelase, I thought he was very good but he also fizzled out never to reach his potential.

To be honest, I think Sanders got lucky, it happens once every blue moon. It was comparable to that Mexican guy Ruiz knocking out Anthony Joshua a few years ago. I don't even think that guy expected to win because he came into the re match very out of shape. I was surprised he didn't get knocked out.
I don't feel it was luck. It wasn't a case of a lucky punch. AJ had himself to blame for that one. He corrected his tactics in the 2nd fight and got out of the rematch mostly unscathed. In the first fight he tried to slug with Ruiz and came up short.

Ruiz doesn't look like much but he can fight. Good hand speed, good chin, decent power. But once Joshua negated all that by staying out of range and boxing off the back foot in the rematch, Ruiz was unable to be effective. And, yes, being out of shape didn't exactly help his cause.

No mention of Dingaan Thobela? Lest Brian Mitchell? Both Legends!

Yeah, I was honestly never convinced of him, but there were many good heavyweight boxers back then, I was very ashamed seeing videos of Deontay Wilder swinging wildly like a drunk then realising that he is apparently the next big thing, I tend to agree with the others, boxing globally is suffering

Most of the SA guys shone in the lower weight divisions. I stand tk be corrected but I can only think of Sanders and Francois Botha as decent heavyweights to come out of SA.

The likely scenario is that AJ didn't do his homework and took it for granted. Ruiz was likely just meant to be a jobber ahead if a big fight for AJ as was Sanders when he beat Klitschko.

Looking at how tired they were in the second round I am sure they now have much better appreciation for the professional boxers.

They most likely were inspired by what Logan Paul and KSI were doing but those two actually got professional boxers to train them and became professionals. They are not the best boxers but it's not cringe watching them.

It would actually have been great if they could have got ex pros to help them as coaches and helped to revive boxing in SA.

Pierrie Fourie, maybe not one of the best but he had guts. I also enjoyed watching Dingaan Thobela.

Pierre Fourie was world class. He could box, great jab, stamina and heart. His weakness was a lack of a substantial punch. And he was extremely unfortunate to run into two great light-heavyweight champions - Victor Galindez, and Bob Foster.

I remember watching the Galindez fight at a friends house, they were one of the first families in our street to have Tv, must have been 15 or so of us packed around that tv set.

As a laaitie I recall my dad had bought a TV back in '76. "Futronic" brand. Don't know why I still remember that after all these years.

Anyways, first fight I had ever watched was that of Galindez defending his light-heavyweight title against american challenger Richie Kates. That was the fight that local ref Christodoulou finished up with a blood soaked shirt. In those days they wouldn't easily stop fights. Enormous amount of punishment could be dished out and they'd just keep on going.

Sad for the guy, I joked about the incident because I never thought it was something that would ultimately result in his death. RIP and Condolences.

Yeah that's horrific. Something fried on the motherboard that is the human brain. Very scary.
