South African OS software

perhaps these peeps can help translate the OpenStreetMap.org wiki and map data so that we can have our open source mapping in other languages as well:P

Wel, die sleutelbord is 'n aangename idee, maar gelukkig vanaf MO Word 2007 is dit makliker as ooit om spesiale karakters in te voeg. En as dit nie werk nie is daar altyd die klassieke ALT + 136.

My dad insisted on using the Afrikaans language pack for Windows on their pc, which effectively changes all the menus and stuff to Afrikaans. It's terrible. Try fixing something in Windows or Outlook Express with everything in Afrikaans.... Computers just work better in English.

thanks mybb for featuring this and giving some profile to work that would probably otherwise have gone unnoticed.
strangely enough, i was trying out the sa eng thunderbird language pack yesterday, the plugin needs to be upgraded to be 3.0 compatible, but i'm sure that'll happen soon.
thanks everydody @translate for your efforts.

I will stick to English, thanks. I believe this will not be any different from trying to translate a grade 12 Mathematics paper to Sesotho. It was a disaster! The meaning is always lost in translation. Try selecting Sesotho on Google for example; you have to translate back if you are to understand. Now, that's like learning Internet all over again!

Ke sharp ka English! Ke a Gogolar, ke a searcher, ke a e-maila, ke kena di-websaeteng.

Is there any other Saffer software out there other than translation programs? Would be good to know if there is anything so we can support locally made things.

You should also have a look at SSuite Office for a free office suite that is in Afrikaans or English. :) They have a whole range of office suites that are free for download.

They have the best of both worlds, an English interface and Afrikaans and English help files. :D Both are selectable in the options dialog box.

Their software also don't need to run on Java or .NET, like so many open source office suites, so it makes their software very small and efficient.

why are the SA locale settings yyyy/mm/dd in some software? they should look into that

A lot of the apps I use are Afrikaans. Opera, FireFox, PGadmin, SumatraPDF, TotalCommander, NotePad++ even OpenTTD.
Sadly some Afrikaans people are too dumb to use their own language. They prefer English for their applications, even those that are available in Afrikaans.

If that is so, why did you respond in English, were you afraid that nobody would understand you?

Yes, it should be yyyy-mm-dd
International ISO format. Year, month, day is the only format that makes any sense in terms of usefullness for sorting.
