Depends on who you are and what you're doing.

For a typical home user, no.
When using public wifi, yes.
To evade geo-restrictions like Netflix, yes.
To evade the law, no.

Thanks Waylander. Certainly not to evade the law but I understand with a VPN you can browse the web in complete anonymity and also have enhanced security because all the traffic is encrypted. I have been looking at getting one with a South African presence like
www.purevpn.co.za for the above reasons. I can also use it in public wifi like you mentioned.

Nope, it'll add some privacy but only to other users on your LAN. Your stuff is exposed at and beyond the VPN's exit node. Which is why it's great for when on public wifi and to fool geoblocks, but not much else for the average joe.

VPNs are not anonymous, and anyone telling you that they are "logless" just want your money.

Even with a VPN facebook and google will still know what type of porn you prefer. There is just way too much tracking tech in modern browsers. Invisible pixels, supercookies etc. Same for google's incognito...website can track you regardless

Security, privacy and anonymity.

Aynomity. For government eyes there is no anonymity on the Internet, unless you are professional and very smart (both). Use Tor Browser for everything else. Tor website gives guidelines how to avoid blowing up your cover.

Privacy. There is no privacy when you visit public Websites, as these guys make money from building up your profile. Tor Browser helps a lot in this case, but you will have to cheat them in some cases, typical example is Facebook.

Security. As it was already pointed out, VPN do not increase your security, but can be useful in the commercial cases listed above. The only exception is when both ends of the tunnel are under your control (like in the inter-office corporate network), having proper key exchange in place. When using public VPN services you are essentially passing your trust from your ISP to the VPN service provider.
