Hi Guys

Is there any stats available as to what percentage of South African Sites
are hosted locally and what is hosted internationally.

I don't have exact figures with me but with the exception of major companies/listed companies about 70% of websites I've crawled are located offshore. Most in the US and UK.

I was hosting in ZA, but have now moved my hosting overseas - but that's because of my sponsor.
 
I love local hosting!

Thing is if your site is hosted US then it does not get listed in a Google Local search (which is very stupid, as google should actually rather use domain TLD's and not the IP addresses of the websites.)

google.co.za will give you exactly the same results as using google.com
google.co.za isn't hosted in SA - it's hosted in the same IP block as google.com (overseas)
The only difference is that the page is customized for South Africans.

What the poster meant is if you select the "pages from South Africa" button and your server is hosted in the US it won't show up in the search results.

Sorry, but you're completely wrong.
My clients' sites (most of them .co.za) are hosted in the US, and even when selecting "pages from South Africa" their sites still show up in the first 10 results.

One example:
http://www.google.co.za/search?hl=en&q=enchantrix&btnG=Search&meta=
and
http://www.google.co.za/search?hl=en&q=enchantrix&btnG=Search&meta=cr=countryZA
 
I agree with texo, they still show up if you search SA sites only. Google is the all knowing all seeing eye, they know where the site is from :p

They probably fo go on domain among other things.... WHAT a .com when I search local sites, but the site is a South african site. They have their ways ;)
 
With a local search, it just make things easier, especially for kids that need the internet today for various school projects. My daughter is in grade 4 and i find the local search a lot easier. But it also links to International pages with helpfull information, especially where sports and politics are involved
