I do hope it lasts. I suggest a bit more pessimism though (not of the whining sort - rather, the backup plan sort). Things don’t go pear shaped until they do.

Heh. I’ve seen videos (and also some areas of India) - the traffic and complete lack of adherence to (formal) rules is quite something to see.

Its like that, no regulation anywhere. I did see some traffic lights and traffic police but everyone flat out ignored them. I remember driving behind a Jeepney the one day and watching a back tire falling off it. The experience gave me a much greater appreciation for what we had back home in SA.

Not really. For instance an electrical company I contract (Im their IT) with, if skilled electricians leave, we get more contracts. Thats kinda whats happening.. more opportunities open up for some when others leave.

Italy at number 5? Clearly all the rich people who want to retire somewhere pretty. Job prospects there for young/mid-career professionals are weak. It seems half of Italy's 20-somethings are in the Netherlands either studying or working.

Yea Italy (and most small European countries) will eventually become retirement villages.

Definitely a good start. My additional considerations would be, is the house always going to be ok - is it big enough for a family, if you want kids, could you get them proper schooling, proper university? How safe would they be? (As young children and grown). What are their career prospects? If your health or the health of one of your family members is compromised, what will the state of the medical treatment be like?

More personally, I would be asking myself, if my relative buying power is going down relative to income year on year, and if not (because perhaps my career hasn’t peaked), what would it look like when it does peak?

Eg, If I look at petrol price change over the last 20 years, it’s just over 5x. If I scaled my income then by the same amount, it would be around R2.3m/y, which is pretty extraordinary - the reality is that I probably would have peaked at some point before I reached this, and then started to earn progressively less in a real sense.
