South Africa's disappointing high-profile websites

I don't know about you guys, but I would prefer not to talk to ANYONE when I buy insurance and I would prefer to buy it online with my credit card. Why can't these companies offer this when so many overseas insurance companies do it with ease?
I've tried it a few times, and also hippo and miway. What a FARCE! Every second spent on-line was a complete and utter waste of time.

the post office site only works when it wants to- try track and trace a parcel and only 50% of the time does it work.

SABC is another bad one- go to sabc3> schedule.
on my system it starts with 23:45- sarah conner chronicles
then goes onto 5:00, then the next show listed is 10:30, then 15:00 from there its okay until 21:00 where it ends.
on friday there were only about 3 shows listed. bwaaahahaha FAIL

The worst part about these terrible websites is the truckloads of cash these big companies are forking out to the web designers who then come up with some useless/ incoherent site that no one wants to use. And then to make matters worse the bigwigs look at the site, think it's lovely and pay without hesitation to the web design companies who laugh all the way to the bank.

I've found it works much better on Chrome or Opera than IE

Even if that were not worth their precious time as you are implying, they could still at least show you what they sell in-store. All their stock and purchases are already included on a database after all. Just look at Makro, for example, they can show you which items are in stock and where. Not always exactly up to date but it's close enough

ok, i agree with you there, that shouldn't be too much trouble, i think it all boils down to how large and skilled their IT side is and how much Budget they got to work with.

There, I fixed it for you...

I heard that www.thedaisychain.co.za online jewellery store got their whole website comprising over 1200 products with database/ shopping cart/ checkout/ payment integration etc fully set up for around R15k. Most of these big companies spend more than that on advertising every hour of every day so I can't see what the big problem/ expense is with getting a sorted website up and running.

Yes, but we're talking about national chain stores here making 100's of millions of rands a month in profits. That companies of this size can't be bothered to put together a decent online shopping portal to sell their goods online shows you the contempt that they have for their customers.

I'm a web developer myself and have built many many ecommerce systems. For a company like Game to put together an online shop with the resources they have at their disposal should be child's play.

The real issue here is that it's just not worth their while to go through the effort in a country that has such a small percentage of it's population using the internet.

Well remember, I'm not talking about an old lady running the "tuisnywerheid" on the corner, these are huge businesses with thousands of staff. In fact, many small businesses that only have a handful of employees are selling things online, very sucessfully, look at computer shops, we all know they don't exactly have huge mark-ups, yet they ship throughout the country. How hard can it be for a huge company with much more influence to do this?

No, I'm quite sure that's correct. Why don't you email the web designer listed at the bottom of the home page and ask them - I think you will be surprised!

nah, i think i'll lean across my desk and ask the development team at my company, but thanks though

I fail to understand why i have to re-enter my log-on credentials when accessing Vodacom e-mail from their mail site. Can't they redirect me instead?

Ok - fine by me - I spoke to them and they confirmed that they could set me up with a similar site for R15k with a year's free hosting including 20gigs of transfer a month and 20 gigs of storage.
