South Africa's failed telecoms projects

Frankly anyone who fails to deliver an uncapped 10mbps pipe for under R500/pm in this year 2011, is a FAILZOR. Which is all of you.

This article ignores the biggest failure of all... one that continues to haunt everyone
in this country, every day.
It can be summed up in one word - TELKOM!
This company has managed, all on its own, to set the country back decades in terms
of business efficiency and cost effectiveness.
Many local companies lost opportunities to expand and develop internationally
because of this.
If the new Telkom CEO does not radically change the archaic Pricing, Product
and Service structure within the next 12 months..... it will be Game, Set and Match!!!

I agree that many companies had a dismal result of their efforts, but comeon, 2 years ago who would have thought we would have luxuries like uncapped which is affordable? I am inclined to think that it is mostly these companies we actually should thank to appreciate where we are today.

MyWireless can be notched up as a "completed failure", it's a done deal.

But there are other failures in the making, including Neotel's decision to go with CDMA and WBS's to go with iBurst. Both these technologies ended up in a technological dead-end and will completely disappear in the next 24 to 36 months. It's also interesting that these 3 (Sentech, Neotel & iBurst) all have/had small customer bases, shocking service and are/were not profitable.

I would add WiMax to the failures as well, from all the players (Telkom, Neotel, Screamer, MWEB, IS, Vodacom & WBS). Again, huge hype, but no delivery. With little chance of ever recovering.

I wouldn't say Sentech had shocking service. I had MyWireless for many years, and it was a fantastic product, and their call-centre was fine on the odd occasions that I needed to call them

RPM - I can't believe you omitted the biggest failure of them all: The "new" Vodacom website! It is a bigger failure than Meep, NokNok and Legends of Echo combined!

Telkom Tender to install Optic Cables RFB 0275-2010

Telkom brought out a Tender in 6th month 2010 to install optic fibre cable.

This tender was withdrawn in March 2011 without any real reason. Now one asks, lack of money, contractorr going to buy the products, Telkom is Falling down Financially.

Well, if you realised what operating costs etc come to, anything under R500 they would be running at a loss...so, take your pic, all or none.

My first post when I joined MyBB was to highlight about half-a-dozen areas where Telkom cable has been stolen & Telkom has not provided any alternatives! Last night was another post from another member - didn't specify his area. Now, this scenerio must have left a couple thousand people without communications & it is my bet that these people pay their taxes, pay vat, employ locals, run small businesses from their areas - now being left communicationless, surely there's a lot of revenue being lost.
Telkom provided the lines & should replace at their cost as they had made a lot of money out of these clients over the years for the same service. In my case, paid "line rental" for over 20 years!!!. So now they got no funds to replace their stolen cables cause they going down! Down! Down!

LOL @ digichilli, forgot about them

+1
Frikkin Kenya has better Internet access that SA and their people earn half as much on average.

I'll nail home what has been said before. Telkoms 10mbps project is one big fail! All it was and ever will be was some bloody public relations stunt for the world cup nothing more. A few people gained from being close to major hubs and key infrastructure points that were upgraded to 10mbps as required by FIFA. Telkom in turn made a big song and dance about it getting everyones hopes up knowing full well that it was only a pipe dream. This also happened a few months before MWEB announced it's unlimited internet and I suspect Telkom had some insider information and milked the 10mbps bandwagon to stop the migration to MWEB and the likes.
