South Coast, no 3g access

I took out a contract for 3g whilst i lived in Rustenburg and still have 18 mnths left on the contract, i recently moved to the South Coast (Umtentweni) and cannot get a 3g signal at all only GPRS.
Can you tell me if there is a 3g network here and if not how do i go on with my contract as i have paid for the 3g service i.e 500MB.

I live about 15 km from there in Shelly Beach, one of our directors lives in 'Tweni there is definitely no 3G bro ;'(
 
Yup, EDGE (MTN) and GPRS here.
Welcome to the forgotten part of the world.
If you can get within 4 km's of Margate, wham, your 3G world returns, but south of that point, nothing.
 
There should be according to the map...perhaps you live further out where the coverage stops??? Have you done a street level search on the map yourself?

Your best bet is to hope that Pieter Uys buys himself property there. :p
 
I dont understand though. According to the map there is 3G coverage. Perhaps he is just in a street where the signal is very weak or being obstucted. Will a antena not perhaps work for him?
 
What street do you live in?

If you are on the river side then you should pick up the main Port Shepstone ones. If you are on the seaside then your nearest tower is along the main road between the two robots - about 500m from the post office center going north. Try and get line of site with that tower with perhaps a five meter usb cable - you can elevate the modem/phone as high as you can.

Well if there is 3G but people are slightly out of range then the best thing to do is get a high gain antenna from Poynting.
 
Im telling you....its Jono sitting ontop of that NodeB with his tinfoil hat trying to plug in and get uncapped Vodacom internet...little devil!!!! :-)

I am just worried suggesting a antenna...cause from what I have heard you need to get some sort of 3G signal..even if just one bar before antenna will help? Is this not true?

Not really. With the high gain antennas you can get 3G signal if you fall outside the coverage area, but of course distance, LoS, cell breathing etc. all have an effect.
 
If your bill is high enough you can get Vodacom to install an antenna in your house: http://programytv.republika.pl . We were getting absolutely no coverage in Uvongo and complained. Go to Vodacom in Shelly and speak to someone there.

PS: I had no idea there were this many South Coasters on MyBB :) Hope everyone had fun at the Lions Show.
 
A Holiday Hotspot like Scottburgh.Vodacom,Telkom has 3G.
MTN does not have wonder why.

Vodacom had 3G for over 2 years and Telkom 6 months.

MTN this is not AYOBA

In all fairness this scenario will apply to all the providers. Besides the obvious economic costs, the red tape to put up a tower can lengthen the process quite considerably.

1. Look at their published profits.
2. If we already have EDGE and GPRS, obviously the towers are already up.
