Ok so my need for this space sim is very specific. I am a Defiance player. In Defiance it is mostly people vs the server with occasional team deatmatch games at random points, where it is your decision weather you want to participate or not, but everything is team based. For instance you will drive to x on your quad bike, see a fellow player engaged with a lot of enemies, you will get off of your bike if you want, help x player and afterwards be on your merry way. I am looking for something similar in the space simulation department. I am not looking for something where the main goal is to fight 24/7 against other players. Does something like what I want exist in the space sim category?

Well, that is pretty much what Star Citizen aims to be, but it's still in development. Next closest thing that is big now and released is Elite : Dangerous (and Elite Dangerous : Horizons) , maybe look into that?

Then there is the classic EVE Online...but it might be alot more of a learning curve to get into and takes alot of time. It might be a tad slow compared to a game like Defiance too. I think Elite and Star Citizen are more where the MMO genre is heading towards.

You can also buy and play Star Citizen in its alpha/beta state right now, hopefully it will release this year, but it's pretty much my next "space MMO" .

Currently have the Combat Demo of Elite. To my disposal is a 2006ish pc with a core 2 2.55Ghz Cpu, 4 GB Ram, 550 PSU and a Nvidia 430 1GB. other is a I think third gen I7 laptop with onboard Ati 7660 2GB Gpu. So my options hardware wise is limited. Amazingly enough Elite works like a treat on my old ancient desktop, even Eve Online demo. As I am not a serious Gamer, more a there is nothing else to watch or do, lets game the last hour or two before bed time kind of guy I doubt I will be forking out a month for Eve, but it looks fantastic all the same.

EDIT: Thank you for the suggestions, don't like the memorability of Elite on a keyboard and mouse setup to much, not as arcadish to my liking as other space games, but I suppose my old Saitek will work there. Currently top of my list of games to go with.

Yea, unfortunately these new space sim mmos are coming with amazing graphics attached, i believe they are also gearing up for VR (oculus rift etc) .

There are also older MMOs like Star Trek Online , but i'm hesitant to recommend those MMOs as i believe it's a dying breed of games, and they are most likely limping along towards a slow death. And yes, i always felt EVE online is a pretty hardcore game, not something you can play casually (like Defiance).

Here's another one from Elite Dangerous : Horizons . There is a bit of a controversy with Elite , they released the expansion as a full new game, so alot of the owners of the original Elite have to fork out alot of money to get Horizons, but it still looks pretty impressive:

Well you could also try EVE Online, it is basically a sandbox game, where you do what you want to do. If you do not want to fight other players 24/7 then you do not have to, there is a lot of other things that you can do and the graphics requirements is not that heavy, it would run fine on your system.

Yeah I tried Eve, very nice and all, just holding it one side and looking for something without a monthly sub, but definitely on the short list.

Ok, so I have played both EVE and Elite: Dangerous. As someone who loved Freelancer, both disappoint.

EVE is true to being an MMO, monthly subscription, steep learning curve, figuratively and literally. The game can be a lot of fun, but it has a slow start. Make sure to join an active corporation, or it will get boring very quick, it is like all MMOs, it is a lot more fun if you play with people you know, or get to know. Some corporations will help you a lot when you are new. Now EVE can pull you in heavily, it did it to me, hehe. It is pretty addictive, but it can go slow later on, especially if you play solo.

Now Elite, it is a beautiful game, but I got bored after a while, as it is difficult to group up with people, obviously later this was kinda fixed with the Wings update, but it wasn't enough for me. Basically the game looks great, plays great, but after a while trading, bounty hunting, missions, exploring, etc. gets boring as it is all procedurally generated, meaning that after while things kinda start looking the same. IT also sometimes feel like a grind if you want to get specific items, as they are expensive. Now I did play this game before the new expansion, played it al launch.

Now this is kind off a negative review of both, just to show you that there is a negative side to both. Though I am getting to the point where I can't play MMOs any more as I get bored very quickly, as I am not as intrigued by the story like I am with single player games. So take this review with a pinch of salt.

Though if you ever want to play a great space game, try Freelancer, it is a 2003 game, so it is pretty old, the people who are making Star Citizen made Freelancer back in the day for Microsoft. Though there are no more official measures to get this game, so you'll have to find a download somewhere. The game is old and some of the mechanics you can feel it, but overall it was a great game.

EDIT: Also if you go for Elite, check up keyboard/mouse key setups, I changed mine, as the mouse controls are weird as hell.
For example throttle on my mouse wheel, mouse left/right as yaw and not roll, as that is confusing as hell, I put my up down thrusters on W and S, A and D for left and right, Q and E for roll. That covers almost everything, just remember Elite doesn't like yaw, so roll and then turn by going up or down.

I remember Freelancer, my ultimate back in the day was Wind Commander Prophecy. I still have those 4 cd's in my cd pouch in the works vault (yeah I decided to keep my oldies). That was my all time favorite space game back then. Currently on the X3 series, busy with X3 Terran Conflict at the moment, love it, wish there was a multiplayer version of the game as it is exactly what I am looking for. Now since there is no other game like Defiance regarding teamwork I should just stick with that regarding MMO and maybe tweak my expectations for my future space game purchase to something like star citizen, that looks stunning. But yeah we are talking R5000 on upgrades for my pc at the least. Or even R8000.

Take it from someone that has played 8 years of non-stop Eve-Online, in every shape or form possible.

Eve-Online is the black spider-man suite. It sucks you in, it overwhelms you, it eats at your soul, all while making you feel great and powerful. And then it spits you out as weak empty shell.

Eve-Online is the greatest game ever. The community and the feeling of teamwork being in a 1000 man fleet simply outweighs anything out there. The satisfaction of being the industrialist or pirate or commander is only limited by you time and effort.

Looking for me in Eve-Online?
Sorry I don't play any more, I'm playing Dota.

Signed,
Bittervet.

Never heard of it...

Not sure if you're sarcastic, but Wing Commander is legendary. It's the main reason why Star Citizen is getting all this money, Chris Roberts made Wing Commander....that is his entire claim to fame and on which Star Citizen is riding..... this is also why Mark Hamill is in Star Citizen, he was one of the main characters in Wing Commander.

...and then they made that movie...with Freddie Prince Jr ....and it all died ;(

Since most of the games' footage were all full motion video scenes with real actors, you can still watch it all today without it feeling too outdated:
