SpaceX Falcon Heavy set for launch tonight

All these live launches SpaceX broadcasts always leave me with a sense of awe, especially with how close they take the viewers to the action. That syncronised landing was fscking magnificent.

The reentry altitude for the Falcon Heavy center core is much higher than a standard Falcon 9, so this was always going to be a risky procedure.

BTW, it look a lot of trial and error to get the normal recovery process right.

Yep. It's marvellous indeed.

But for those of us who were around at the moon landings, SpaceLab, various early probes like Viking and Mariner, and Shuttle, these are rather milder in thrill. Not that it in any way detracts from the significance. And thrill at the tech and engineering.

I read a piece which noted that the boom in science and technology students were in part due to the broadcasting of the moon landings/SpaceLab/space probe events. The lack thereof as of late is what is leading to the decline. I hope what SpaceX is doing rekindles young science minds.

SpaceX can stream a wireless video feed from thousands of kilometers away and here I am struggling to get Youtube to load 144p from a content cache in JHB. Sigh
 
FANTASTIC stuff. Glad I watched it live. Not knowing if it would even get off the launch pad - the suspense.

I was astonished at how fast it cleared the tower and got going. They lit the fuse and it took off like a, er, rocket.

To see a slow lumbering launch, find a decent clip of a Saturn V. It could loft more than double the max payload of Falcon Heavy, and stood erect at 363' vs 230' for the FH. None of it was reusable, though, and that makes this special.

It's been decided that FH won't carry human payloads. It's more of a PoC for BFR coming in a few years. Can't wait to see the new Raptor engines lighting up.
 
Pity they lost the main thruster. Almost a full success. Also the tesla roadster was supposed to be put in orbit around mars, they overshot a bit and its headed to the asteroid belt now. Although I am still not clear if that was a mistake or if they just had to prove they could get at least as far as mars. Obviously this package did not have jets to self correct its orbit as would a Nasa package.
 
FYI the live stream was the second most watched live stream in the history of youtube after the red bull stratosphere jump a few years back. Nice!

That was something else. Also explains that video from The Verge where they're going mad about the sonic booms but you can't hear them properly.
