Don’t spam me, please

While the National Consumer Commission considers starting a registry through which South Africans can opt out of direct marketing, about 70 000 consumers have already signed up to an alternative national opt-out or “do not contact me” database.

Does not work - I still gets lots of spam. The Cell phone companies are the big distributors of personal information and the reason why we are bombarded with so much advertising and other cr@p.

When I first got my mms able phone, the same day I magically got mms adverts. Only place I ticked it off was at vodacom4me. Now past that into the present, I hardly (if at all) get any private calls any more after just not giving out my number, not entering any sms competitions and of course applying the anti cold calling methods.

I have a fundamental issue with this. Why should I opt out if I did not opt in?

If I have not given anyone permission to SPAM me, then all SPAM is an invasion of my privacy.

SPAMMERS should be forced to name the source of their information so that legal action can be instituted against those people/companies that are selling our private information.

Exactly.

It has to be. The very same month I signed up for a cell contract (to my regret) I started receiving calls from other places offering me cell contracts.

These opt out lists dont work in my opinion. I've subscribed to it, but its not working.

I am getting so much spam especially from Adega. I wish I could report these people somewhere and get them fined somehow. Their messages dont have opt out and I have already phoned them to get my name removed. That lasts for 3 week then I am back getting spam from them.

Excellent point! What annoys me even more the past few weeks is the constant "Private" number call. When I answer, the person/bot on the other side drops the call. When I connect the call, but don't say a word, they drop it after a few seconds! so damn annoying. Sometimes you can't ignore these calls because it could be important.
I wonder if this is some sort of automatic call through a database of this kind where they simply check if your number is in service or some crap! aaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!

This is exactly my argument - if you have never received any permission or consent from me - to begin with, why should I be forced to opt-out now and acknowledge to these idiots that they now have a valid email addy or contact number to abuse me further on.

I was under the impression that cold-callers had to provide you with their source of information? They just refuse to abide by the law for the most part...
