Demonstrable causation?
To be fair that article also mentions other studies have found the opposite. But then this is all being reported in a newspaper notorious for its poor reporting of scientific research, so who knows what any of those studies really say without reading the actual research.
It's bad in the inner city schools in the UK. It's questionable however whether any kind of corporal punishment that would be legally allowed would make any difference. In the old days children were essentially beaten without any form of control, both at home and at school, and this did frighten them into behaving when they could be seen by adults and taught them to avoid getting caught. The problem schools and at home usually has been that they switched from beating the children to having no punishments of any kind. This has then been interpreted as meaning corporal punishment worked and no other form of discipline does. My experience at school was that when done according to the law corporal punishment was largely ineffective because really once you've been caned once you realise it is no big deal. Hell I knew guys for whom it was game, see how far you have to push this teacher to get them to send you to the headmaster (knowing that the headmaster, unlike some of the psychopaths pretending to be teachers, would stay within the law).
